Woolly Mitten for GOTM?

The experts have the Gauntlet within the GOTM, and there are prizes for all the top scorers, etc. Perhaps it's time to provide some encouragement at the other end of the scale!

So I am proposing a "Woolly Mitten" to go alongside the Gauntlet. The idea is simple: same Victory Condition as the Gauntlet, but using the Adventurer save. The winner of a Woolly Mitten is automatically disqualified from entering future Woolly Mittens. The usual restrictions also still apply: you can't take the Adventurer save if you've ever been in the top half of a GOTM -- it's unlikely any "pseudo-staff" will check this, but you can be guaranteed that whoever comes second in the Mitten is likely to check back in the results and catch out anyone ignoring this rule!

I don't actually have time to run it myself, but I'm hoping that when Obormot or Erkon compile the Gauntlet results they might agree also to announce the Woolly Mitten results.

My hope is that by providing an encouraging "prize" at the entry level, we can widen participation. (Personally I'd be ineligible -- top half in too many GOTMs though I'm unlikely ever to win any prizes.)

We now open the discussion up for the throwing of rotten tomatoes at me!...

Better duck... Here comes the first tomato!

I like your idea, even though I am hopeful that I have dq'd myself with my BOTM03 result. But there is one serious flaw (well, more than one but the one that caught MY attention, anyhow). Some VC's in the Gauntlet may be unattainable by folks attracted to the Adventurer class, particularly if we go up to an emperor difficulty. My suggestion would be that an Adventurer class gauntlet be tailored for Adventure class skills, rather than tie it to the Challenger class gauntlet.

But the idea of getting Adventurers to focus early and stay focused on a strategy towards one victory type is great. They (we?) will improve more from practising that than Challengers do.

I think that the goal for new players to shoot for initially (if not already there) is to be able to win on monarch at contender. So I agree, chasing culture or diplomacy (except back door ;)) may be too nuanced for more novice players. So a wooly mitten rotating among domination, conquest, and space might work.

Or if you want to make it a barbed wire mitten, make the VC time victory, highest score wins!:lol:

I make my living in the global rankings with domination or back door diplo wins on monarch or below (won once on emperor IIRC, an occasional cultural or conquest), and that has made the XOTM fun rather than frustrating for me. So I think that is a good first goal for novice players to shoot for.
