Worker automation bugged

Been playing for sixty hours and haven't seen this happen till just now.
I hate micromanaging workers so I usually set them to auto and they do reasonably well IMO. Today, however, I was playing Pan-Asian and researched the tech that gives you Biowells, this was around turn 150, at the same time that discovery finished I had a pioneer unit finish in a city (I had four cities at that turn [don't know if this makes any difference I just figure more info is better than less]). My next turn I purchased three more worker units (which I believe gave me a total of six or seven) and they started building Biowell improvements. After they finished, however, most of them ceased doing anything, one went on to start an algae farm, then quit mid task only to wander off into the middle of the ocean and sit there doing nothing (until I cancelled the automation, those that weren't moving would continuously register 0/2 moves).
So I cancelled all of my automation and pushed them off their squares and started them on different tasks. When they finished with those tasks I re-automated them, some went off to other jobs, but once they finished they stopped production again and just sat there.
1) Yes they had tasks they could complete, there was still stuff left for them to do.
2) I just activated the "Play In Starships" tab today.
3) I have had automated explorers do something similar before when they ran out of modules but that was fixable by moving them to one of my cities (refilling their modules) and resetting the automation.
Version 1.0.2.658
Thanks in advance!

If there is anything someone would like to know that I missed please feel free to ask.
After posting this yesterday I reloaded the same game, and it happened to me again. I checked to make sure all the options were set properly in the options screen (which they were) and eventually had to work them manually. Makes for a long game when you are playing an expansionist role.
