Workers dissapearing!

Ok, I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen, or happens to anyone else but in my current game (Its only my second time playing Civ III, I own Civ II) when I make a worker join a city it only last for one turn. The population point is then gone the next turn like I just wasted a worker for nothing. Why is this? The city is no where near a jungle so it's not as if my population is getting killed by disease. I have the latest patch 1.17(some number). PLEASE HELP!

Are you sure that your city can support that extra citizen? The city label in the main screen will go red if the city is short on food, yellow if the city aint growing and white if everythings fine.
