I'd have to say the one on the last game of regent i played was god auful, all tundra hills and mountains, its only redeeming fetures were the abundance of luxuries(5 dyes and 4 gems) and iron, it had one coal and one horse too, i had to dominate my closest neighbor so i wouldnt fall behind in techs, and i had to work the heck out of my land to make it good enough to make medivel infantry that i used to take over portugal (well, he had 2 cities in the middle of the ocean that i wasnt willing to get at before caravels, and by then he had MPP's with everyone but me) i did end up falling about 6 techs behind (but i beat afew out of england, who was only supperior to portugal because of warring with too many people at once, so she couldnt get a MPP) i mostly couldnt trade for techs because portugal ruined my rep because they were giving me spices when i invaded them.

But because regent is so easy i won anyways by around 80 points at the end of time, i had 27% of the pop and 21% of the land, my closest rival had 17% and 15%.

all tundra and only one game resource in a ten mile radius. :( then all that was ocean  weirdest start

I met 3 other empires in the 1st 3 turns. moscow, berlin and Paris were all within 4 hexes of my capitol. Worse yet I was on a pennisula and yes it was a huge, pangea map and there were only 6 empires.

My current game had me all alone on 2 continets and my 1st contact was with the Incas in 1768AD. Im still useing spearmen while everyone else has Musketmen or Riflemen. I was as many as 20 techs behind. I only have 1 wonder built (statue of Zues). All others were finished and obsolete before I researched the tech. I do have 48% of the world and most in population. I was able to get Democracy and traded it for 13 techs to 6 other empires. Im still behind but I know that I cant be invaded with only 1 empire not useing a carrack.

Nine square island, middle tile is flood plain wheat, surrounded by volcanos. ;)

Impossibel. The map generator won't ever put you on a "no cities allowed" tile ;).

He never said that he wasn't playing a mod.

But you're probably right.

It will if the map is a randomly-generated one from the Editor. Make, maybe, five random maps in the Editor and it's almost certain that at least one will have a Mountain start location.

I usually restart untill i get something halfway decent, the challenge in the game should be about military strategy and city management, not trying to build an empire out of jungles and mountains

I agree with that point when it's about a mediocre to bad start; you know you can overcome it, it just requires a lot of tedious work.
However, winning with a horrible start can be a lot more rewarding than cruising to victory with the usual Cow at the River.

How to win on Emperor with an all mountain/water start.

This one's the worst I've seen personally, if anyone wants a challenge. The starting land tiles are all desert, with one oasis, IIRC. There is a small amount of grassland (five tiles?) not too far away; it's the whole sizable island's only redeeming feature that's visible early. I haven't played it myself yet, but I plan to soon. The .sav is Monarch.

Started this game last night. Playing with the ottomans on regent. As you can see I started out in Istanbul the other part of my problem, other than the fact that the entire island is mountains was that Arabia started in Madina.
