WOTM 23 Final Spoiler

Fun game... I took the challenger (deity) save and went the conquest route.

- Vassalized Toku and Peter.
- Meanwhile Qin vassalized Alex and Genghis, and eliminated Washington

At 1775AD, Qin is the only non-vassal left, and I have him at friendly - so no risk of an unexpected DOW until I am ready. We're about even in techs, with Qin going down rocketry / apollo, and me bee-lining for protective Mech Inf.

All that's left is to spam a bunch of Mech. Inf. and pick off Alex and Genghis one by one, saving Qin for the end. More or less a guaranteed conquest win despite a bunch of early mistakes (including a very early DOW by Alex whose roving archer DOW'd and raised one of my early cities 1 turn before I had enough cash for an axe upgrade...)

Unfortunately in terms of playing time I'm probably only about 2/3rds through and Real Life won't let me finish, so I submitted an imcomplete. I might come back and finish sometime.

Although.. as a warmonger, the Warlords AI is a lot less satisfying to play against. They really don't have a clue... :( I probably wouldn't have been able to pull off what I did here on BtS.

Anyway - submitted my incomplete for comparison. Congrats to those that finished! (And thanks for the deity game.. maybe one on BtS next? ;))

Cheers,
Munro

I know the deadline passed but I wanted to see how this would play.
I hate normal speed. I actually thought I was off to a good start. Settled the capital and founded hinduism, built the shrine and popped two more great prophets, one to bulb theocracy and one to settle. Settled a city to the west which got me iron and some good cottage land. Took out a barb city to the south east which bagged silver. Declared on the pack leader Peter and took three cities off him with a stack of axemen.
But why was I still so far behind? :'(
The Hindus deserted me one by one, a few converting to Buddhism and Genghis founding Confucianism and converting the only Jew, Tokugawa to his cause. I built up a stack of Hwachas and macemen ready to take the fight to Peter again but a few turns after I declared on him, Toku and Qin turned on me. Beset on all sides by enemies I watched it all slip away. :(
I really hope that playing these games will eventually improve my skills. >_<

The low participation on Challenger is understandable, if disappointing. Warlords Deity is too much of a handikap to compete for the gold medal.

Similarly to BOTM 10, the key to winning on deity was identifying the optimal grand strategy for the map, not tactics or micromanagement.

Wow! Impressive as always, US!

I would be very grateful if you could explain what grand strategy best suited this map and why.:goodjob:

The short answer is SSE/WE.

The long answer is, well, much longer. Taking on a pangea full of warmonger-ish Warlords deities, with Korea no less, is a challenge even on a map as lush as the one we had. There were quite a few tricky moments, especially considering I aimed for a victory that felt decisive at least in some ways.

Unfortunately, only three players can relate to my choices; everyone else played on Immortal where the game is much different (the jump in difficulty from Noble -> Immortal is about as big as Immortal -> Deity). Moreover, no matter how well I played I was out of the competition for the gold medal. All in all, I want to keep some of my Warlords deity secrets for a game where most participants will be able to relate, and I'll be able to compete for the gold.
