I decided to start a new thread to discuss the ww1 scenario im currently working on, originally started by eivind. Seein as the other thread says "help to finish my ww1 scen" i thought this wud be more appropriate!:D
For all those who havent a clue what im talking about, eivind has been working on a new ww1 scenario for a while now, something which i think has been badly needed. Anyway, after eivind finished most of the hard work like the units etc he passed the scenario over to me!
im pretty excited about my progress so far, and i would have posted the files to you eivind but my email appears to be down, and i dont really want to post them here until theyr ready for beta.
anyway, on what ive done:
ive finished off all the civs techs and populated the cities
ive created each sides respective armies, i had an idea on some of the units, which i'd like your approval on eivind. instead of calling the units "french division", i thought of changing it to "Infantérie Division", and likewise with the british division being renamed to "infantry division". With each country having its own word for infantry rather than just the name of the country, wat do u think? ANZAC divisions and American Divisions would stay the same though.
Also, ive added a new unit, the "Allied Partisan", which i attempted to draw as a collection of rather battle-worn looking french and british soldiers. though my results were not too pleasing, mayb u could help eivind? you seem particularly adept at these sort of things. i thought the idea would be that these units only appear through events, and are much stronger than normal divisions to represent the allied grim determination at holding onto the western front. they would appear when germany starts to take french cities, to help either the human french player to retaliate or the computer french player to put up a really decent fight.
ive also started to touch up the terrain a bit on the corruption in the forests and so on.
ive just begun the events today, ive decided to create a seperate events and maybe even a rules file for each different nation, so that it can be a seperate challenge for each nation, and also so i can add a personal touch to each nations briefings on certain events. I envisioned the Germans reporting the battle of verdun as a "great victory" whereas the british generals describe it as "a fluke, sir. it'll all be over in a month, those huns wont know what hit them" etc.

anyway, i hope to have the beta up for testing by monday, or possibly sunday if i continue at this pace, following eivinds approval of my progress. Just shows you what someone with ALOT of time on his hands and undiagnosed insomnia can do!!!
:D :D :D

btw, i will have the files to you by email as soon as my hotmail decides to work, hopefully v soon!

Unfortunately, the scenario doesn't seem to work on my computer (though I've got it running once). This is for MGE, isn't it? However, I can still open the graphic and text files, so I can still help. Now, to business.

Throw out the Allied Partisan. The French actually had some problems with mutiny, especially in 1917, and the Germans were quite thorough. The American units will be the ones used by the French to recapture their cities, and if the human player can't hold on to some thread of hope until 1918 or so, then the scenario is either too hard, or the player is no good.

The seperate events and rules for each nation would work great for a WWII scenario, but not WWI. Why? The fighting didn't vary enough. The tech tree is already too long for this war, and I don't know how you distributed the units and populations. So, please, don't do anything else until you at least let me see what you've done already. As for renaming the infantry, that would be too confusing. Language must stay consistent.
I'm looking forward to seeing your progress myself, though.

Now, unless someone objects, I'll now start on the Labels and Game texts. I suggest we use "Fortnights" as our time periods. This will mean roughly 100 turns for the entire war. I'll change gold to Million-- Whats? I suggest pounds, since Britain was the "Banker of the world," or dollars, since most players will be familiar with that.
BTW, I notice you're using these things: ` What sort of program can I use to type those over letters?

I'm glad to see that you've got started, thanks alot, apreciate it! :)

pleasing, mayb u could help eivind? you seem particularly adept at these sort of things.
Just give me the gif an I'll get started!

ive just begun the events today
Remember to make an"open season" events for PBEM.

Rename to whatever the name you'll like, it dont confuse me, but I'm European....;)

Cheers!

[Roleplay]Hello...
*Grand Admiral CivGeneral knocks on the door
...Anyone home[/Roleplay]

Anywhay how is this Scenario Comming :).

Arrgh! Someone just released a scenario with the identical name; The Great War. What are the alternative names?

Here are the Game and Labels .txt files. As mentioned above, I can't get the scenario to operate on my computer, so I couldn't test any of it. For the A.D. part of the Labels file, I put Fortnight, since I don't know what the turn intervals are. If anything needs changed, just let me know and I'll fix it.
As for the name, the Great War is pretty generic, and I suppose we could use it anyway, but that would be unoriginal. How about "Over by Christmas"? That was when the war was predicted to end as of Aug. 1914. Or perhaps we should find a phrase to describe it in French or German, as several scenarios seem to do.

I heard a sad story that occurred on the Western Front, I believe, on the first Christmas a soldier had a trumpet and started playing it which caused all the soldies of both sdies to stop fighting, come to No Man's Land and hold hands. Then they started singing Christmas carols. The day after they went back to slaughtering each other. I know this is completely random but your over by christmas comment reminded me of it.

Limey or anyone else that may know the answer, when do you think this scenario will be finished?

"Over by Christmas", I like that name :) I think that will be it...Everything is up to Limey right now, and I havn't heard from him...

Well, thanks. As for Limey, I can't say I've seen or heard anything of him since his last post. After accomplishing so much in a few days, I thought he might have it ALL done by now! Hey, as long as we don't see "'The Great War' by The Limey" show up on the main page, he can take his time. ;)
As for completion, its really hard to say. I'd guess a couple weeks if everything goes well.

While we're waiting on The Limey, I guess I'll search for a good title.gif. Any preferences on what it should be like? I can find photos, maybe some art from the war, but if something hand-made is preferred, then someone else should do it. And what about the briefing (text that pops up when scn is loaded)? Should I write it, too, or would someone else like the priviledge?

well, you may be wondering where ive been for the past two weeks. Rebooting my computer, thats what ive been doing, i promise that before i die i will drag bill gates and his computer-emporium to my grave with me. Firstly my hotmail killed itself, though not before i sent my progress to u eivind (though if it hasnt arrived by now i can only think the worst  ) then my computer decided to die aswell. stupid XP, give me good old 3.1 and dos and i can do anything. my files were backed up, and im franticly searching my cd case for the copy of the scenario.
However, all i can do is post my progress to you people as i no longer have the time or patience to continue with it. I sincerely apologise, and am myself very frustrated as i nearly had it finished. Well, all that can happen now is that either it will magickly turn up in eivinds email or i'll find that goddam cd. All we can do is wait. Once again eivind, im very sorry, it seems all ive done is to completely waste everybodys time..........

Limey, you didnt waste anyones time just because of some unfortunate occurences that happened were not your fault, just the fault of Microcrap.

Microcrap

It's all ok Limey, you should not feel guilty! :) Thanks anyway! You probably did a good job :goodjob: (I havn't got anything in my mailbox from you).

;)

Hey, I can certainly identify with you. My computer crashes on a regular basis (though I've recently ordered a new one). If you still have the files, just post them here if you must. I won't mind, anyway. Also, you can still do like I've been doing, just posting the files here that you CAN work on.
As for the title.gif, I found this and a few other British war posters I thought may work well. I'll post my favorite below, but if somebody feels something different would work better, I'd be happy to find something else. I'll get started on the briefing shortly.
One more thing. I've been looking over the Rules.txt, and would like to suggest some changes. For one thing, only half the techs seem to be used. I think we should shorten it up a bit. Also, the Partisan unit should be removed, since they can get annoying in a scenario. Besides, as I mentioned earlier, the French, British, and Russians were on the verge of mutiny during much of the war, so you wouldn't find many soldiers heading into the hills... However, maybe we could replace them with a "Francs-Tireurs" unit for the neutral nations. Or just set them to be built only in Belgian cities. Finally, I notice that all the artillery units are of equal strength. However, Germany and Austria-Hungary dominated this facet of the war, so their's should be stronger than the rest.
