I don't have the image but... Inca were next to me and built several terraces in the desert hills (which stayed terraces when I took the cities) before I took them over... with petra had tile yields!!!!
I had one with the Netherlands (Sadly I dont have the savegame anymore) where Amsterdam had a flood plain in the middle which got spammed with Polders. Around that were mostly hills, of which 2 had Silver and 1 had Marble. Petra got built there, and all the non-Silver/Marble/Flood Plain tiles got Great People popped on them.
It was beautiful.

Playing as the Mongols I had a Petra city on a flood plain river (Petra doesn't affect the flood plain yield, which is great by itself), and plenty of desert hills...I think it was my third city and, before long, was my largest and most productive city...probably one of my best cities ever...I can't remember now if I also had some "food" wonders, which would have helped.
But, yes, Petra can be fantastic in the right circumstances.... Heck, getting scooped on Petra with an ideal location would be ample grounds for a "rage-quit"...
Playing an Egypt wonder game on Prince (yeah I know, first G&K game ;P). Marathon speed, I had almost every production wonder and tons of Great Engineers on squares with the Freedom finisher. I think my production building wonders was 400+ or something. Once I got Hubble, I built every spaceship part in 5 turns each
When I get home I'll try and find the save for an image!
That's what happened with me on an Emperor game (my first Emperor win, I think). Petra in St. Petersburg, a desert coast (ocean) city, and it was just insane. One of those, "Gee, let's see... which VC do I want?" situations.
