Zen's Beyond the Sword (Sunday) - Players Wanted!

I m not very found of Hamachi too. and it has some bugs i hear from other peolple. I think gamespy is fine and if it doesnt work we can always switch to hamachi.

I have played games by direct ip and hamachi and hamachi is hands down the best, I have not encountered any bugs as yet.

I have never played civ on gamespy. Is it not the case that games that can't be completed in a few hours tend not to get continued on there? If i am wrong about that let me know.

GameSpy is out of the question.

I've never seen any problems with Direct IP without mahatchi. Maybe the main advantage is that the host can continue to run his firewall without any tinkering. That's probably reason enough to use it.

OK I was a player on a direct ip pitboss game and there was no end of problems with players firewalls blocking other players from logging in. In the end we all had to drop our firewalls while we were logged on together. It is okay if it is pure pitboss but when you have 'power sessions' with everyone logged on at the same time then direct ip without hamachi is a nightmare in my (limited) experience.

Unconqoured Sun - ok you are in.

Test game to start monday. You don't have to play it just at least try loggiing in with hamachi.

Next Sunday (Sept 2nd) will be the opening of the main game at 6pm GMT. We have 7 players so far which I think will be enough for a good game. If more show up before then so much the better.

Ok test may not be up until Tues due to some unforeseen bank holiday monday commitments.

For the main game I am tempted to use an earth map (with random starting locations) for the main game rather than terra. Designed maps make for much more interesting game play IMHO than random maps. Any objections?

I prefer random maps. Then memorizations don't play a factor.

I object to Earth or any other map we'll know prior to the game. Exploration is part of the game, especially so when at least two of the players have chosen "terra" civs already.

yeah i agree with both post above. Make it big and small or big and big. I cant remember the other new map lol sorry.

about the game? How do i log in??? I dotn see any login IP adress passwords etc.

Personally I think the fact that we would all have a pretty good idea where stuff was on a earth map .. oil in the middle east, silk in china, corn in south america etc. etc. is not too bad a 'con' when weighed against the more interesting trade and strategic situations that the contrived earth map will have compared to a hodge podge random map.

Also the earth map is STILL a terra map so dutch and portugal still have the advantage of expoiting/colonising the new world. More so since they could be placed specifically on the western coasts of europe (or eastern coast of asia). On a random map their no garauntee that dutch and/or portu won't be placed slap bang in the middle a siberian-like vastness surrounded on all sides and blocked in by other civs.

Test game is up -

hamachi host IP 5.137.24.23
network name - zen's game
network password - 'password'

Log in procedure for noobs

Hamachi is running - click 'join network' enter 'zen's game' for network name then 'password' for password

You will now be logged into my hamachi network

Fire up Civ BTS then go to multiplayer -> direct ip -> join game

enter my hamachi ip (5.137.24.23) into host's IP (there is no game password) hit join game.

select your civ not forgetting to password protect it.

play your turn.

any problems? any questions? let me know!

Test game is random 'terra' large size.

Zen, it's your pitboss so if you want Earth go for it.

As for me, turns out I can't free my Sundays. Good luck and see you all in future games!

If I was running a pitboss I wouldn't put anything up to vote.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!

My ISP is broken! I can't connect by broadband or even dail up at the moment. Not sure when it will be fixed. Hopefully before sunday but not looking likely. Consider the main game postponed until further notice. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Update on ISP prob. I have for the time being a dial up connection but that is no good for hosting or even playing MP i think. It turns out that BT sabotaged my connection because I had switched my phone billing to another company!! I have given in to their monopolistic schemes by switching back to them so I should get my broadband back soon, hopefully before this sunday and if so game on!! Don't count your chickens tho. Really what is the point of privatising the retail side of the telecom industry if you allow the only wholesaler to compete with the plethora of pointless retailers as a retailer as well!!!!!!!! Idiots!:crazyeye:

Dont know but here in holland broadband is never a problem. connections are always good. You just have to pay your bill offcourse.

Lucky you. I have had LOTS of trouble with broadband ISPs here in the UK and I ALWAYS pay the bills in full on time...

My second ISP (euro1net) was very quick, cheap, reliable and had good customer service but then suddenly went out of business when BT cut them off apparently for not paying their bills to BT (sole provider of the lines).... My third ISP (bulldog) got bought by cable and wireless and then pipex.. When pipex bought bulldog, cable and wireless kept some of bulldog's customers (including lucky me) but then inexpicalbly decided to withdraw services to their residential customers  :crazyeye: .. So then i switch to pipex.
Everything is hunky dory for all of a month when I get talked into switching my telephone billing to the same company that provides my electric and gas billing.. Then BT provider of the telecom network has a fit and switches off my broadband without even informing me or my ISP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is very uncompetitive. Surely the communications watchdog should be looking into this situation. Thankfully we have had very few problems with our ISP, but there have been a few problems here and there.
