It is, but it is nothing new. Kings, rulers and empires have fought proxy wars since the first civilizations arose.

We would call it a segment of real politik.

Ukraine is hardly a proxy war, it is a people defending its life and property against a foreign invader.

The US needs to send Ukraine more money, more guns, more bombs, more missiles, more of everything they need.

I guess they need to further empty the prisons to save money and rid themselves if undesirables.

In January 2023 the FSIN has a total prisoner population of 433,006, which included all pretrial detainees. This number makes up 0.3% of the population. Only 8.9% of prisoners are female, and juveniles make up 0.2%.

In another year they could probably cut that by half.

UK Ministry of Defense estimate that February 2024 has seen the highest casualties rate for Russian soldiers since the beginning of the war.
By MediaZona tracker, Russian casualties in January-February were the lowest since the beginning.
Looks like Western sources are getting desperate to cover up for Avdeyevka disaster.

Over the past two and weeks, our casualty list was expanded by about 1,200 names—a figure typical for the last several months. Although we are currently seeing more public posts than usual and are struggling to keep up with processing them. Therefore, the actual number is likely higher.
It is important to note that the most recent data is likely to be incomplete and subject to significant revisions in the future.

And nevertheless, their graph shows much lower casualty rate comparing to the last year and constant decrease since October.
"most recent data" stands for February, where they currently show near zero casualties.

I can only wonder what is the reason for you to be obsessed with Russian casualties, meticulously counting dead people and destroyed vehicles, regardless if reports about them are correct or pure propaganda.

Says the person posting the loss of an Abrams literally two posts up.

Amazing! That's almost 12 Russians killed for every Ukrainian killed (31,000 in total). No wonder NATO don't want a ceasefire. Another 10 years and Russia will have negative troops left.

All the West has to do now is to convince its own people that Ukrainians are winning. I'm not sure why most still think a ceasefire is the best option for Ukraine in this proxy war. Maybe the surveys after Avdiivka will see a swing back to reality for them.

Two week forecast shows almost no rain, so Rasputista could be over soon and tanks will become more effective again.

Not really , foreign policy is not conducted by plebiscite, all we need is a majority in parlement, like here,

X 30 or so nation states that have chosen to oppose Russian imperialism.

Besides Belgium, the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Canada have already joined the purchase. The ammunition will be delivered to Ukraine before the end of March, Mr De Croo said.

Anyway, to put Russia in a position to accept a cease fire, you need to put it in a defensive position or make it unable to attack first.

That will not happen without sending enough munitions to Ukraine to break the current momentum.

I see no indications that anyone there is interested in a ceasefire, ultimately all wars end in negotiations, but that may well take decades.

We best prepare for further escalation imho.

Well, Ukraine's position is that any agreement with Russia is impossible, because Russia cannot be trusted to obey it. This supposedly includes peace agreement or cease fire.
The only logical conclusion from this position is that fighting will continue until either side is wiped out off the world map.

I will risk a slap from the JagB for irrelevancy and say that neither the 3rd Punic war nor WW2 in Europe ended by negotiation.

Russia will likely gain further fround due to its preponderance in artillery, but Ukraine is big and can afford to lose more before stabilising the front.

WW II definitely ended in negotiations, H. killed himself and the new government negotiated with the Allies, the fact we have an unarmed Germany now was a result of those...

Best leave the Punic wars out of it, or the mods have a crisis :)

Russians conquered about 1/1000 of Ukranian territory last year, at this rate the army will reach the NATO border by the turn of the century, but smaller actions are to be expected sooner.

Unconditional surrender by the German military was not a negotiation.

And what happened several years later with de facto puppet West and East governments was not in any meanful sense the end to WW2.

It still was. They also left the Donitz government on power for a few weeks to enforce it.

The Germans did buy time to flee west. The surrender was unconditional but the Germans made the best of it.
