Nevermind. I figured it out, I was using the desktop icon to launch the game - but when I chose 'play' from Steam library I got the option to play using AMD Mantle. It works as it should then.

I looked in the files in the SDK directory and there were missing files for bison and cocoa. Copying for example cotton.dds to bison.dds didn't work, so either they're supposed to have different names or it's more complex than that (not supported).

That's why I wish there was a legal "Reseed!" or similar for use with the Gauntlets, rerolling takes forever...

Nuts, I'm doing like 10-20 rerolls without mountains, consistently on 3 billion years. Haven't tried "wet", since it seems counter-intuitive to getting a desert start. I have 3 billion years, arid and I checked ignore start bias. Usually no dice.

I know mods are illegal, is there a legal way to reroll maps fast? Even with an SSD it takes a while to restart to get a good starting position. I found something called "Reseed!", but it's a mod and it will allow you to see hidden resources like coal and iron right off the bat so it's no good.

It's just the version of save game. If your game is patched properly then you're good to go.
