We need to get back to work rather than squabble over the remaining seats. We Senators were elected by the People's will, so if a consensus can be reached in the Senate, I see no wrong in an appointment.

As such, unless Mr. Eitus claims his seat by this time tomorrow, I move to tentatively grant Miss Megame the seat, on grounds of her receiving a greater share of local votes than the PIP candidates.

I wonder why don't you abolish elections once and for all, since you do not care about them or people's will. You will elect who will represent the Pulias City instead of the Pulians electing who they want to represent them.

And, supposedly, you are the democrats and we are the anti-democratic party.....
 
You realize our entire government is controlled and overseen by a monarch right? Democracy is a privilege established and allowed by him. If you are so much in favor of democracy, why not riot against the king?
 
Democracy is not a privilege, but a right conquered by the people. The Monarch reigns and the people rule. The Monarch is the head of state and the Prime Minister is head of government. If the Emperor does not protect the democratic rights of the people, then of course we shall protest against him.

Absolutely it was my idea. You can't have an environment where a character is publicly calling for murder and not have consequences to those actions.

As soon as the interview responses came in I knew there was going to be no way that Godwin could treat him just like any other aspiring politician, what with the calls for emperor murder and so on.

This is an entirely logical outcome to such a sordid storyline: actions have consequences and good people will be hurt in such a strident political setting.

Edit: As a follow-up to the above, hopefully that puts an end to the public calls for murder and we can get back to the closest that we can get to normalcy.

Indeed. Section 4 of the Casual Vacancy Act 1822 states:

(2) The Crown will take the following circumstances into consideration when appointing a replacement:

(a) Where a vacancy has at any time occurred in the place of a Senator chosen by the people of a city and, at the time when he was so chosen, he was publicly recognised by a particular political party as being an endorsed candidate of that party and publicly represented himself to be such a candidate, a person chosen or appointed under this section in consequence of that vacancy, or in consequence of that vacancy and a subsequent vacancy or vacancies, shall, unless there is no member of that party available to be chosen or appointed, be a member of that party. It is intended that the Crown will seek advice from the relevant political party when appointing a replacement to take up the vacant Senate seat.

(b) If the relevant political party has no member of the party available to be chosen or appointed, or if the Senator, when elected at the most recent election was recognised to be an independent Senator, the Crown will appoint an independent Senator. In this circumstance the Crown will have complete discretion in its decision of who the Crown will appoint as an independent Senator.​

Yes, as per Section 4 of the Casual Vacancy Act 1822:

(1) If the seat of a Senator becomes vacant before the expiration of his term of service, the Crown may appoint a person to replace the Senator.

I've quickly learnt that arguing with fascists it pointless, so I'll direct this to the players instead of the characters (:p): in the Pulian situation, the people didn't fight for democracy, it was simply seen as an expedient way to rebuild after the Fall (and the Grand Majah was crazy and unfit to rule directly). The PAU and PPP implemented our democracy, and the sovereignty of the Senate was ceded voluntarily from the Crown.

There is not a social group for the Senate; as per real-world convention we debate issues publicly here on the floor of the Senate (in-thread :p), however the Cabinet does have a separate social group. But I'll have more to say on this particular point later. :)
 
Oh, and Senator-elect the Honourable William Melda publicly congratulates Senator-elect the Honourable Heerlo for his re-election to the Senate for what will be his fourth term.

He also publicly congratulates the independent Senator-elect David Richterson for his victory in Coventry. It appears as though the people of Coventry do indeed like their independent Senators (refer to election links in my signature to see what I mean :p).

And he publicly recognises the efforts of the independent candidate Sofia Megame, who put up a surprisingly good fight for an independent running against the former (and popular) Prime Minister. He hopes that he will see more from her in the public arena as time goes by, and sincerely hopes the Emperor appoints her to the presumably-to-be-declared-vacant Pulias City seat in line with the provisions of the Casual Vacancy Act 1822.

Pulian general election, 1832

A general election was held in 1832 to elect seven senators to the Pulian Senate. It was the third general election held in Pulias. For the first time ever there were ties between candidates, necessitating a second round (or run-off) election to resolve the situation.

Please note: In the 1822 general election an independent candidate won in Coventry, however according to the Pulian Electoral Commission most voters thought the individual they voted for was a Pulian Advancement Union candidate, therefore in the below information there are two listings: * indicates for that count the independent candidate in 1822 was considered to be in the Pulian Advancement Union, ** indicates for that count he was considered to be an independent.

*** indicates that this number was subject to a run-off election which was held at a later date.

****The Pulian Imperial Party vote had a swing of -50.6 against it in Coventry in the first round, but that was running only one candidate last time instead of the two this time, which split the voting base and makes the figures look more harsh than they are with two candidates vying for the same voter pool that returned one party candidate previously.

((Those swing figures are only really useful for the first round vote; they look really confusing because of the run-off elections, because I didn't originally design them with the intention of run-offs --- in fact, I didn't even know run-offs were possible back then. :p

From a purely game mechanical point of view I think electoral reform should be on the agenda for the Fourth Senate to avoid run-off elections, and to also avoid situations like the Mossbacks winning a seat --- one-seventh of the seats --- with less than one-twentieth of the national vote.

I will have the Fourth Senate post up later when I get home, to ensure I can add the pretty Senate diagram which I can't do where I am presently. :p))

Independents' Day Declared in Run-off Elections

Independents have seen their highest vote counts in Pulian history according to information released by the Pulian Electoral Commission. The official results from the recent run-off elections held in Haven of Peace and Coventry were released yesterday.

In the first round of elections a week ago, the independent candidate David Richterson effectively drew level with the two Pulian Imperial Party candidates, returning former Senator Albert Bazil and first-time candidate Henry Absoluti, son of the late Opposition Leader. But in the run-off election Mister Richterson blitzed the field, attracting a record-breaking 65% of the vote and earning his seat in the Fourth Senate, expected to be sworn in by the Emperor later today.

In the contest at Haven of Peace the independent candidate Sofia Megame essentially levelled with the long-serving Senator and two-term Prime Minister the Honourable Heerlo, but was unable to best him in a one on one contest once the Honourable William Melda was removed from the field. Despite that, her efforts were impressive, increasing her share of the vote to almost forty percent of the electorate — a striking if ultimately unsuccessful effort from a candidate who a number of political commentators had previously written off simply for being a woman.

The highest vote share recorded for an independent prior to this election was the ambiguously-aligned Bouncy Mischa who won almost 30% of the Coventry vote in the 1822 election (just under 6% nationally) whom most voters regarded for unknown reasons to be a candidate for the Pulian Advancement Union, which he was not. That record was however shattered by a strong showing from independent candidates this election, with a combined national vote between them of just over 15%.

Are we seeing a drift away from the tradition of parties to a post-partisan future where only independent candidates vie for seats? Is this a one-off occurrence because of the novelty of candidates running outside of the traditional party structure? Or could it be that the voters simply considered the candidates themselves to be high quality and worth voting for? I suppose the best way to answer that question will be to see what showing they have in the 1842 elections.
 
Mister Godwin's family insisted on a fairly small, family affair for the funeral, which was to be conducted in private. However, because work was such an important part of the late journalist's life, invitations were also sent to his colleagues in the Godwin Herald, Senators past and present (those who were still among the living, that is) and all senatorial hopefuls he had interviewed over the years — with the key exception of Christos von Bismark.

If Mister von Bismark was unhappy about being left out, it was an issue for another day because the private nature of the funeral meant that only those specifically invited knew where and when it was being held.

The proceedings went on for quite some time — with so many politicians and political aspirants in attendance it was always going to be a speech-fest — but the Senators-elect in attendance would have to leave soon to visit the Emperor in the Palace where they were to be sworn in as Senators of the Fourth Pulian Senate.
 
My condolences go out to the family of Mr. Godwin. Today Pulias weeps for her lost son.
 
In the First Party Conference of the Nationalist Party, in which along with members of the Nationalists, former members of the Fascist Party and other non - fascist Conservatives participated too, it was decided to change the name, adopt a logo for the Party and to sign a new declaration. Some people believe that Christos von Bismarck wants to tone down the more radical rhetoric in order to attract more center-right voters to the Party.
