Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 79
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Seventy-ninth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

In this game, the designated VC is Culture. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Cultural victory turn.

In this game you will play as France and lead the French Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Immortal difficulty and at standard pace. Culture is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until March 1st to complete the game and submit.

It provides one additional gold and 2 culture. It also provides the same +50% defense bonus as a Fort. When Flight is researched its culture yield increases by 1 and its gold output rises by 2. Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Saturday, 1 March 2014.

The Save can be found here.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOA! CV! Immortal  and a petra start
Absolutely glorious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is gonna be so much fun I can tell

Hey GoTM staff since CV on lower difficulty levels just turn out to be Domination games anyway, so I appreciate these CV on higher difficulties (but if possible you can also have a game with always-peace option on... that would make peaceful CV rather unique)

Nice production and food start. The main question is: mountain or no mountain for your capital? One tile NW on the river hill would seem to be the best spot for Petra and food and would grab all of the visible lux, but no mountain. Two tiles west would have a mountain and still have fresh water (lake), but would miss out on one gold and all the desert tiles to the east of the river, not to mention lots of river tiles. Two tiles to the SE would have a mountain and river, but would miss out on cotton and all the desert tiles to the N and NW. Plus it looks to be close to the coast but probably not coastal. I'm leaning toward one tile NW and aim for Desert Folklore and Petra, but it will be interesting to see if the fastest time is with a mountain capital (although the fastest time will likely be someone using the known CV "exploits" anyway).

Maybe go for a combination of Tradition and Piety (reformation belief to buy science buildings with faith would be good), with Aesthetics, Rationalism to Secularism (kind of an odd combo - Piety and Secularism ), and Freedom ideology. Depending on the rest of the map - 3 or 4 cities total and play peaceful.

Something is wrong here: (from the submissions page) We are currently accepting submissions for Civ5 GOTM 79 ( 12 hours),

Fixed. The dates in the database were a month early.

Sweet! Just won my first Deity CV playing as France. CV on Deity is very hard (for me, anyway). Hopefully Immortal feels like a cakewalk in comparison. How much lower should I expect their culture to be than Deity? How much slower to wonders? Is a peaceful pre-Internet CV possible?

It's gonna be tough to pick a spot for the cap. Too much good stuff! And whether to shoot for Petra. Anyone know when it usually goes on Immortal?

Oh no, this is not what I expected, such a nice start...:)
I played a little bit around with immortal france (and worse starting positions :) ), but I am still not sure what wonders I should plan to build...
Is the France-bonus worth to be part of the plan or just the "Standard-religion-tourism-thing"...?
I never get the GL on immortal...

i really dont like culture games for GOTM, its either sacred sites ICS spam, or annoying domination game, everything else is sub-optimal.

Got BNW and got back into Civ 5 a bit... been playing some of the older GOTM, not for speed, just for enjoyment. This will be the same. Immortal is a big challenge for me, and France with culture sounds very interesting. The start is superb! I will be sending my warrior to the hill NE, and depending on that will either settle on place or on said hill.

I haven't played a Petra-friendly start like that in a million years ... wow. Really got to take a shot at this! Thinking may go OCC straight to the big P if I can. But Immortal isn't a slouch, it's not guaranteed ...

Specifically, this is the kind of start where I want to go OCC for the first 100 turns, build the HG, Petra, NC, and then just keep going. May not be perfectly optimal after some point but ...

Petra is definitely achievable on Immortal, although it's easier with nearby forest. Unlike most wonders, not everyone can build Petra, so there isn't as much competition.

Forest helps, but mostly you just need to have a large capital and mines to work by the time you finish Currency.

The downside is that you really should go for NC first if you want to have good tech, otherwise you won't beat the AI to the critical Renaissance Wonders on Immortal, so I generally go for Philosophy and super-early NC, before Currency, and I just hope Petra is still there. If it's not, I haven't lost out on anything. The other thing is that on Immortal, delaying Construction can be dangerous, not as dangerous as on Deity, but still. If you have enough archers, you won't get DoW'd unless you have a truly aggressive neighbors, but if you do get DoW'd, archers won't cut it. This position looks very easy to defend though if you settle on the gold next to the lake, but then you lose out on an observatory, a very handy thing...

The big dilemma for me with this start is whether to plant first and second city next to the two mountains. Clearly Desert Folklore for the win here, but if you plant next to those mountains instead of on the gold you'll have a pretty slow early game. Having that oasis in the second tier will make a big difference, as will the 2gpt from planting on the gold and the early trade luxury.

What do I open the save file with? Do I just use Civilization V? The computer doesn't want to let me select Sid Meier's Civilization V as the program to open the SaveFile, what do I do?

Welcome to CivFanatics and GOTM. :wavey:

When you click on the save file link in the announcement thread, the save file will try to download to your computer. If you browser is set to download all files to the download folder, you will need to move it to your C:\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single folder so the game can find it when you click load save in the Civ5 main menu.

edit - it sounds as though you have your browser set as I explained above. Your can cut and paste it into your Civ5 My Games folder

You should boot up Civ5 and select "Single Player" and then "Load Game" and then select the downloaded save.

The save must be in your My Games, Civ5 Single Saves folder (complete file location as in the post above) so the game can "see it".

Thanks, Leif, I appreciate the help :)

Also, how do you attach signatures and change the title under your name, or add a profile image, thx again :)

You must be a member of CFC for 5 says and have more than 5 posts to be able to do those things. As you have 5 posts, you only need a few more days to achieve 5 days. Then you click on "MY Account" while logged in at CFC and you should find those options listed on the left side of your screen.

Good Luck.
