Who the hell is Juan de Fuca and why is he special enough to get a plate named after him?

As it turns out, the plate is named after the Juan de Fuca strait right nearby, which was discovered by an ionian explorer Ioannes Foukas in service of Spain, who discovered that strait in the late 1500s

Yea, you're right. I memorised the name incorrectly.
His name was Ioánnis Phokás or Ιωννης Φωκς
