[TOT] Axis Thread - Over the Reich McMonkey vs. JPetroski

I'm getting spread pretty thin now & need to build up the number of day fighters. Most of my Me110 have been assigned to night fighter squadrons, at least until the USAAF ventures further into Germany.

I'm sallying out into the Atlantic to cause disruption but I'm not certain I'll be able to sustain it. I'm undecided if I'll stay & fight or just do some damage & withdraw to repeat the process. At least that would force the Allies to assign more resources to that theatre.

Munich builds Refinery I. Prague builds Quartermaster. Dresden builds Industry I.

I managed to do some damage to the Allied forces in the Atlantic, but I think his air power will wrestle back supremacy before I can get reinforcements to that theatre. Had I concentrated from the start I might be in a better position.

Calais builds Flak Battery. Paris & Rotterdam build Refinery I. Bremen & Schweinfurt build Refinery II.

I'm starting to build up my aircraft numbers now, especially Fw190 and Me110 for night operations. The Allied night bombers keep on managing to sneak through my radar network and evade my Ju88s and other spotter aircraft. If I can detect them then I can kill them. The B17s are a completely different kettle of fish. Wild Sau will allow me to divert Me110s to combat them, especially before long-range escorts are available.

Turn 21:

Rotterdam builds Quartermaster. Le Havre rebuilds Military Port. Wilhelmshaven rebuilds Civilian Population I. Döberitz (N) builds Jadgfleigerschule.

Advanced Radar II developed. Proximity Fuses next up to increase the effectiveness of my Flak 88 batteries.

Fortunately, I had plenty of aircraft in western France, well placed to intercept the B17 attack. It's not clear how many are following this up or how badly my aircraft will be mauled in retaliation but I felt the need to put on a show of force after the recent bombing of my Atlantic ports.

Turn 24:

I needed around nine fighters to shoot down that damn Spitfire over the North Sea. That sucker did NOT want to go down! I did not mention this in the thread as it would alert John that I have a lot of aircraft in the area vulnerable to counter-attack.

With the focus shifting from building up Industry to aircraft production to replace losses I feel I'm stagnating somewhat. Treading water instead of growing. The Allies may be taking heavy losses but they're waring me down too. Fw190s take two Freight Trains to replace. Those could be used to build a factory or refinery.

Turn 27:

Rouen builds Flak Battery. Munich builds Quartermaster.

The 15th Airforce was reached by the Allies while my attention was firmly fixed on western France. I've begun to swap back some Me110 squadrons to daytime duties & will try & build up some fighter cover ASAP.

Turn 29:

Karlsruhe builds Civilian Population I. Peenemunde builds Civilian Population II. Brunswick builds Refinery I. Stuttgart builds Quartermaster. Hannover builds Industry I.

Political Support I (+4000 fuel) developed. Political Support II next up. The aim is now more advanced Fighters. Science ramped up to 80% = A tech every two turns.

I've spotted a formation of Halifax bombers, at least eight in strength, flying due east over the north sea. With the Pathfinder over France presumably being a diversion I've moved 26 day & night fighters into the predicted flight path to intercept. If they do head east for Hamburg then they're in for a nasty surprise. I just hope the Allies don't have scouts or photo recon in a position to spot my reception party. If he does decide to turn south I can easily pivot in that direction as I have plenty of Ju-188 recon aircraft to track them down.

The fighter situation over France looks pretty decent at the moment. I could do with some more Me110s to destroy bombers. The real lack of aircover right now is over southern & central Germany. My flak batteries have been doing a decent job but to really put the hurt on the B24 Liberators I will need additional fighter strength ASAP.

Turn 30:

Nantes & Brest rebuild Industry I. Lubeck builds Quartermaster.

My night scouts pick up the RAF bomber stream north of Holland. The Halifaxes have been joined by Stirlings. At this point, they could be heading for either Hamburg/Bremen or the Ruhr. I will need to position my interceptors in a way they can divert to either location or indeed both.

The thick yellow line is the approximate range of the RAF bombers. The Pink circles are the approximate concentration areas for my fighters. I've found no RAF night fighters or scouting aircraft and their Pathfinders are dropping Window all over North Eastern France as a decoy so I'm pretty sure this is the main show & it's not a double bluff. I hope. The Me110 in the screenshot will move just beyond the yellow line so that they are not spotted by the advanced bombers & spook the rest into evasive action. Wish me luck!

So here is my deployment for the ambush. This is either going to go spectacularly or the Allies are somehow going to spot my force & divert out of range. As well as the aircraft in the screenshot the are also six Me109G6 Wild Sau fighters at Rottum to cover a possible attack towards the Ruhr.

Turn 31:

Nurnburg builds Quartermaster.

Political Support II developed (4000 fuel). Engines II next.

The trap is about to be sprung. It looks like I should be able to intercept 13 out of 14 bombers. As long as I can, at the least, badly damage & destroy the majority of them then my Flak should prevent them from doing too much damage. The Me109s can then mop up any stragglers. At least that's the plan.

Taking screenshots is the easiest way of keeping track of the bogies as even after they are spotted they remain invisible on the map.

Well, that didn't go quite as well as I was hoping! Four shot down, four damaged but still capable of fighting and four untouched. My rocket firing Me110 are capable of taking out Stirlings with one shot but are a bit hit & miss against the Halifax. My Ju88C are pretty much useless and I'll be disbanding them in favour of better-armed aircraft. I have managed to position four Me110 & six Me109G6 in the anticipated flight path. I anticipate at least one or two civilian areas being set ablaze, but if I can kill off another four or five bombers I'll count this as a victory.

(Screenshot from my planning phase. most of the aircraft are now either in the bomber stream of to the east between Bremen & Hamburg).

It looks like the plan may have worked!

Brussels builds Refinery II. Freidrichshaven builds Civilian Population I.

My Radar/Ju-188 Recon combo continues to prove effective in locating and then pinpointing RAF bombers for our night fighters to then attack in an efficient & coordinated manner. Some of the Halifaxes prove to be tough nuts to crack but my Me110s did a little better this turn. Even the Ju88s proved useful in finishing off badly damaged aircraft.

I'm not impressed by the B24 Liberators, though they do have considerable range. They are not the equal of the B17s.

Amsterdam rebuilds Refinery I.

Engines II developed. Wunderwaffe Program next with a view to the science wonder. Industry II would be good too but none of the aircraft researchable give enough of a bonus to bother with just yet. The prop aircraft all look much of a muchness. Sure, later versions have a little more range or armour but none are war changing. Right now I need quantity over quality. Jets could really make a huge impact so I'm going to make a beeline for them.

Turn 35:

Cormielles & Lannes airbases build Jagdfleigerschule. I should have done this at the start really. Better late than never. The pressing need for fighters prevented me from doing this up until now. Currently, I feel I have an adequate number of aircraft to put up a decent defence.

Wunderwaffe Program developed. Jagernotprogramm next up with a view to building the wonder of that name.
