[TOT] Axis Thread - Over the Reich McMonkey vs. JPetroski

Turn 36:

Kiel builds Quartermaster. Leipzig builds Industry I.

Turn 37:

It looks like I failed to post this last turn as it is still showing here as a draft.

The turn before last my radar picked up an RAF bomber formation east of Paris. Last turn I picked it up again only slightly further east and was deliberating over whether this was a proper raid or a diversion to draw my night fighters south. As I was unable to detect any raids in the centre or north I decided to deploy a large force to intercept. This turn I picked the formation again approaching the Rhine but can only find four squadrons. I'm sure there were more than this before. My spidey senses are tingling but I'm going to see if I can wipe this force out, which will allow me to relocate some of my fighters north in case my suspicions are correct and this is merely a feint.

Turn 38:

Rouen & Lille build Industry I. Hamburg rebuilds Civilian Population I.

Jagernotprogramm developed. Interceptors II next. I should have gone for these sooner really as the rocket firing ability will be hugely useful.

New RAF night raid detected over the North Sea north of Holland. At least 5 Halifax and one of the new Lancaster (there's bound to be more). I've calculated their possible next turn end location and decided they're either planning to hear due east towards Hamburg or east then turn south to the Ruhr. I'm going to go with the due east course as this is where my defences are weakest and the Allies have had the most success recently. Pathfinders are dropping Window north of Paris. Unless this is being used as a double bluff (possible) it's probably more of a hindrance than a help as it lets me know a raid is incoming somewhere and that it probably isn't where the Window is being dropped!

Turn 39 cont...

This turn I completed the Jagernotprogramm & will be building more Aircraft factories. I've been building more airfields to lessen the risk of a group of aircraft being strafed on the ground in a single raid. I also need more shields to support these squadrons. Radar coverage is now adequate. At some point I'm going to need to garrison Calais again but there's no point until I can do so in strength. My aircover is excellent in France, getting better over southern & central Germany, decent in the Low Countries, strong over the Ruhr but weak over NE Germany. I've developed good AA cover for my freight trains heading to the Reich & Holland, with Flak Trains positioned along the route. I swapped from moving them at night, which had been very effective, to day as the number of night interceptions picked up (predictable movements) and I could not build Flak Trains on the night map or transport them there.

Now the Allies will be able to develop long-range escort fighters I'm going to need to prepare for more daylight raids deeper into Germany.

Turn 40:

The allies have launched multiple night & day raids from several different directions and in force. I was able to do some damage but I just don't have enough aircraft. This will need to be rectified ASAP!!

I could have shot down more aircraft over France but it would have left my fighters terribly exposed. I opted to pull them back into defensive positions and hope they can weather the storm.

If the raids continue on like this I'm not sure how I will continue to put up a decent resistance. This makes me more certain that wonder weapons like Jets and V2 rockets may be the only way to do significant damage to the enemy. If I try to match them with conventional forces I'm bound to lose as they will just wear me down.

Turn 41:

Brunswick builds Quartermaster. Lyon builds Refinery II. Nantes builds Military Port. Dortmund, Dusseldorf & Dresden build Aircraft Factory I.

I managed to encircle the remaining Ruhr Dam for this turn. I hope the damn thing disappears soon and not under a rain of RAF bombs!

Turn 42:

Interceptors II developed (Fw190A8). I've gone with Industry II next to boost production so I can build some replacement aircraft. Wonder weapons will just have to wait for now!

Bordeaux builds Refinery I.

P47s & B17s are an absolute nightmare to destroy. It took half the Luftwaffe to finish off what amounted to a few stragglers north of Paris. God help me when the really huge formations come over!

Turn 45:

Bordeaux builds Refinery II. Schweinfurt builds Flak Battery (was intended as a placeholder until Industry II researched but I forgot to slow production). Cologne builds Aircraft Factory I. Dusseldorf builds Refinery II.

Turn 60:

I think it's clear that the war is now lost and it's just a matter of the Allies whittling down my defences piece by piece. Now that the flow of Freight Trains from France has dropped below six per turn my airforce will gradually begin to decline. I'm happy to continue to play to allow John to enjoy his victory and gather valuable data, but I have given up hope of victory.

I made so many mistakes along the way that I'm now in real disorder and I can't see how I can rectify the problems. On the plus side, I have kept notes and have a much better idea of what production to prioritise & strategies to pursue in a future game.

Turn 67:

After the Schweinfurt/Regensburg victory bonus and with my airforce once again building up strength things are not looking quite as grim. Industry is increasing and in two turns I should have the technology to begin producing Jet Fighters which will allow me to take on the Allied fighter escorts, allowing the conventional aircraft a gap in which to attack. I'm saving up Freight trains in anticipation and preserving my airforce as while building up flak for the front lines. I doubt I will be able to resist or repel the invasion but I will try and keep the freight trains coming for as long as possible. My plan is to try and fight the allies along the German frontier & hopefully force a stalemate.

Turn 69:

The first Jet fighters will be delivered to front line squadrons next turn & not a moment too soon. In hindseight I wish I had pushed the science rate faster early on but better late than never. I just hope I'm able to produce enough before the invasion and Freight shipments from occupied France are cut off. Will they be enough to turn the tide in the face of Allied numbers? I guess we'll find out soon!

I'm saving my aircraft in their heavily AA equipped bases on the western borders of Germany in preparation for the battles of Belgium & Holland. No point sending them out on a limb. This does mean pretty much sacrificing France and the freight shipments, but I figure they're lost soon anyway.
