Civ 3 Complete does NOT work on Leopard??

Has anybody run Civ 3 complete successfully on the new MacBooks?

I cannot start the game in Leopard, on a new MacBook. I am running Leopard, and the MacBook is now using the GMA X3100 integrated video chipset.

The Universal patch is installed.

If I hold the shift key, I get the option startup screen, but when I try to launch the game, the same thing happens, and civ will not startup.

I tried loading XP on the MacBook, with Bootcamp, and my windows copy runs fine. But I feel this is a painful way to satisfy my civ addiction

It runs in Leopard OK here, but I have a Mac Pro with Geforce 7300GT. I can quite believe that the new graphics driver for GMA x3100 may cause problems - Apple does seem to be good at breaking Aspyr's games with every new driver.

Have you tried running in a window? I've seen some situations where this works when full screen mode causes problems. Use the option startup screen to change to windowed mode.

Another option you might consider is using Parallels to run your Windows version. It can operate with your Bootcamp installation, but doesn't require a reboot. You run Windows in an OS X window, and with coherence you can even run separate Windows applications in their own OS X windows. Beta build 5540 seems to be Leopard compatible, and even runs Civ4 for Windows here.

Complete runs fine under Leopard on my MacBook Pro.

In fact, my gotm71, which crashed on all my other installations (PC and Tiger), finally works. Alas: too late.

The MBP has a GeForce 8600 M GT.

Both Complete and PtW run full screen on my MBP and on my old MDD PowerMac under Leopard.

On the PowerMac I have the impression that load times of saves are faster than under Tiger.

The chances are better if you report it than if you don't. Raise a ticket on Aspyr Support. It's obviously an issue with the new graphics, and they may raise it with Apple. You might also want to send feedback directly to Apple. Since Apple are currently beta testing 10.5.1, it *might* get fixed in that.

i'm running leopard on a G4 powerbook. 'complete' won't start up, but PTW will.

unfortunate really, as i always get my arse kicked in PTW but do occasionally manage to do OK in complete

It sounds like some simple corruption if PtW runs OK - they are both based on the same code as far as I know. What happens when you try to start Complete?

i get a dialogue saying "an unrecoverable error has occurred and civilization 3 cannot continue"

EDIT: since posting earlier, i tried the old remedy of deleting the prefs and now neither complete or PTW will start - even after a reinstall, both generate this same error dialogue. i even used leopard's 'time machine' [for the first time!] to step back to the previously working version of PTW [and my preferences folder] from yesterday but they're both still bombing out on me.

trouble is, it's not actually generating any crash logs. i had a console window open before while trying to launch the app and nothing got recorded. the crash.logs i've got in my crashreporter directory all relate to previous times when civ crashed while it was running.

the current 'crash on launch' problem disnae seem to register with the system's crash logging at all

Maybe the DVD protection software is failing somehow. Is the Civ3 Complete DVD in the drive and showing up in the Finder?

i don't think that's the problem. whether the DVD is mounted or not i just get that irritatingly vague error every time; "an unrecoverable error has occurred and civilization 3 cannot continue". seems it disnae even get as far as asking for the DVD to be inserted if it's not in the drive.

I doubt if this is reporting the same problem. Trying to run Civ3 from the DVD is a no-no anyway.

When you reinstalled CIv3, and removed the preference file, did you also delete the Civ3 files in your ~/Documents/ folder? I wonder if they contain something that is causing grief.

deleting the stuff in my docs folder didnae make any difference. however, i have had one minor success. i was able to run the game when logged in as root, so i reckon there's some kind of permissions shenanigans going on. even logged in as root, i get the 'please insert the original disc' message about 4 times out of 5. a random series of ejecting and reinserting the disc, coupled with ticking/unticking 'ignore ownership and permissions on this volume' for the DVD works every now and then, but sommit is obviously seriously wrong somewhere.

o well, that's what i get for doing an upgrade to leopard instead of a clean install. i'll do some boring backing up and try a clean install over the weekend and see if that makes any difference.

well happy to say leopard is working with civ 3 for me...
i did install [deleted]...wonder if that has anything do with it...up until i applied [deleted] the game crashed....hrm...

i managed to get civ3 working again by binning leopard and *upgrading* back to tiger again. funnily enough this fixed the about half dozen other apps i had which no longer worked properly.

leopard ain't ready yet IMHO

Amazing!

I had only one application that failed under Leopard - Photoshop Elements v.2, which was way out of date anyway. I put Elements 4 on my Christmas wish list, and it is now installed in Leopard and working fine. I can now trash my Tiger installation.

I got a new MacPro, (comes with Leopard out of the box) its runs Civ4 amazingly well, but Civ3 won't launch.
It does seems to check for the DVD, (if I don't have it in the drive it will show a dialog asking for it) but once that check is satisfied, it just disappears from the dock and thats it.
Hmpf, maybe a motivation to play more Civ4.

Where's the day apple was known for its backward compatibility?
