Do pathfinders become composite bowmen after you give them a promotion, so not the ruin 'advanced weapons' promotion. Otherwise I have a lot of them left.

They only upgrade to Comp. Bowmen with weapons from ruins, otherwise they do not upgrade at all, ever.

No, unfortunately they belong to the Exploration Unit Branch - a branch with only one member: the scout. Unless you trip a ruin and select an upgrade to CBs, you're stuck with Pathfinders forever. Use them as outposts on the borders of your empire if you really don't want to disband.
