Does anyone understand religous presure?

I just won my first religious victory with 12 civs but i never understood how you can see things going up and down. I have the feeling, that the religion doesnt spread besides using Apostels and Missionarys.
And its really dumb that you cant see how many religious people are in Citys that have no major religon. -.-
Overall the whole Religon interface is kinda messy to see through.

Yeah, the religion interface needs some work, like a lot of other bits of the UI. I think religious pressure still exists as a means to spread religions, but it seems to be much, much weaker than in civ 5, so as you say in practice you have to spread your religion mainly through missionaries and apostles. I kinda understand why they've made it that way, after all if you could just found your religion and let it spread naturally to get the win it wouldn't be particularly compelling gameplay , I still think pressure should be changed to play a larger role though.

Unfortunately, there's no UI feedback regarding religious pressure, so it's a black box.
