From the desk of the CFM (Chief Foreign Minister):
* Major, Major stuff this turn!
* All info updated regarding Loco – make sure you stop by the embassy to put your input in on our first letter to Loco.
* In the International Relations Report section, I have added the base beaker value to each teach we're missing or that our rivals are missing. Should help with analyzing potential trades. I'll be updating the first page of both embassies with this information also.
* Piffle, I believe, has made a pretty remarkable tactical blunder. By setteling where they did, they now have a city in a crummy location, that won't even allow their ships to pass between the two oceans!! They obviously settled there to prevent us from reaching their homeland – and that much was a success – but at the price of carrying around a nearly useless city for most of the game?!? I'm not sure that's a very good deal.
Other thoughts on this?

I'm not sure I'm clear on what you're trying to say Agarwaen? - but it's good to see you speaking up!

I was just pointing out in my update that it seems to me like Piffle picked a really poor spot to settle. It blocks us from exploring their land, which is sad – but Piffle will be stuck with that near useless city the whole game… or until someone razes it…

I'm certainly not advocating settling down near there. I DO think we're going to want a city on the connecting isthmus to allow our ships to jump between oceans at some point… but not till our core is more secure (ie, settle the better locations near home first).

Is that what you're also saying?

They'll could stick another city I guess for a canal, but perhaps they've discovered enough about the map that they feel it isn't needed to have a canal?

yeah, I was trying to say something like that. In the early game good spots to cities are too important to do something like Piffle did.

And I support the idea of having a Canal, but later.

Absolutely! I love your updates, they are much appreciated! :goodjob:

Regarding the current in-game situation, what makes me a bit nervous is the fast and steady increase in Piffle's power. :twitch: I hope it's just because they are building some axemen or archers to fight barbs or garrison their cities, but we should pump out some axes of our own real soon (which we've luckily planned to do anyway).

We didn't lose any points for cracking the whip in eternal eye? !?!?

BTW I do read this every turn ;)

Oh – we certainly lose points for whip cracking… er… I mean accepting the willing sacrifice of our noble citizens for the greater good… it'll just show up next turn. See turn 92, for example. Shows our point loss from whipping on turn 91.

Did you notice if Innovia built a wonder?
I was in a big hurry this morning and forgot to look!

P.S. I'm glad you're following along! :)

I opened the save, hunted around in the event log, and even hit enter to end the turn; I didn't see any mention of a new wonder. I also checked the Top 5 cities. No new Wonders.

They may have traded?

It's for sure - there is NO new wonder.
That's quite the point jump they got... I don't think they traded... we'd see the new tech... no strike that... they must have traded, it always seems to take a turn to show up in the diplomacy screen.

I wonder what they got?? Maybe we'll learn more when they finally respond to our letter.
Real thing that's nagging me... WHAT did their trading partner offer them? Must have been something better than our offer. :twitch:

EDIT: oh, and on the whipping - maybe it does register the same turn, but I never do anything with the saves except open them up and take a few screenshots... so I wouldn't see our point change till the next turn.

Tech trading is a little different here than in Civ3. I remember hearing that when you learn a tech, you can't trade it for a turn. So if we see a point jump due to tech, we won't see the tech available for trade until the following turn.

Or something like that :)

I think you mis-read what I wrote :)
(granted, it wasn't the most clear thing I've ever written!)

You're exactly right - I confirmed that it worked this way in our last trade with Piffle.
Next turn we'll find out what Loco traded for.

Loco has had a big run in points lately (92 +7, then 93 +9, then 94 +9 again for a total +25 gain in the last 3 turns) and then Innovia jumps +23 also on turn 94 – without any wonders showing up – this suggest to me Innovia and Loco are trading.

Anyone see any obvious holes in my theory?

Working off this idea, I've crafted a new guess at the map that I'm pretty proud of.
This seems like a good guess at a balanced custom-designed MP map… every civ is connected to exactly 2 other civs, and it'll make for some interesting late game dynamics.

…also makes me wonder if Iron (and other key strategic resources?) may be located just offshore in those black areas between continents where there are no land bridges? We should get a boat out and take a peek!

Please offer feedback and further thoughts/point out flaws in my wild speculation!
At the least, it's something to chew on while we want for some kind of confirmation (via letter or getting the save back) on what's going on with Loco.

:salute:

I Like it alot! Looks Great!

What is does point out is that setting up city site E and F (I think anyways) Basically the two coast connecting cities. Is important.

The reason for this is think of the two of the together kind of like the Panama Canal in which we control East and West!

I like the way Aloha got shafted with the smallest landmass ;)

If there are other 'Treasure Islands' in the black, we could almost certainly access them before Astronomy. I strongly doubt that Sirian would place an early resource like Iron in a location accessible only by techs that come so much later. Let's get some workboats out as soon as is practical :)
