ImmacuNES III: Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy

P.S.: Isidor is a male name...

A new Immaculate NES is born!!! Behold!

EDIT: fixed seon

EDIT 2: i mean i fixed the update not fixed seon- that takes a vet and i am not a vet.

hmm, I got moved. Are the Pilcheta npcs?

I am not so sure about that Immaculate. Psychiatrists, maybe, but not vets. Vets are for every day wounds from wrestling with a particulary viscious speciman of an American Robin.

The throal are NPCS. there are no other NPCs.

LOTS of people got moved- so sorry... you can't all be in the same spot.

Sjykalfar. The map says Sjykfallar, I believe.

That said, this looks like an awesome start  Looking forward to getting the thing rolling for real.

Also could you shove the map in a spoiler please? Its difficult to read the update if you have to keep scrolling left and right.

EDIT: So I take it that you're the Sjyalfar DE, who is Pilsheta and Achatin?

Achatin est moui. That leaves three more unknown nations. dun-dun-dun...

I provided them with a relevant copy of your ‘council compact’:

We have shown that rights to property are a necessary good for an orderly society. What of the issue of slavery, the ownership of another person?

Persons can certainly be considered property. But who owns a person? Our common sense dictates that the spirit born into the body owns the body. That spirit contains its movement, its thoughts, its actions. The spirit makes active use of the body it owns. Our language supports this view — an evil spirit who inhabits and controls a body is said to have “possessed” the body; this possession is seen as unnatural. The evil spirit has stolen the body from its rightful owner.

Slavery removes the control of an individual’s body from its natural spirit to the slaveowner. This transfer is made without compensation to the spirit, the true owner of the body. Involuntary servitude also steals the body. It is a crime.

We thank you for helping us in battle against the flying horror. Without your raiders help, we would have lost many more men. We resupplied your airship and you're welcomed to visit our caverns again, we'll gladly share our food and supplies with you.

During your Airship crew visit, they made comments about some of our traditions. Their leader even gave us a copy of ’council compact’. I've read this letter and discussed it with council - but We still fail to understand, how one can say that justice is a 'crime'. Your letter talks about enslaving the soul - while Your own juridical system destroys the soul, the body and the mind of the law-breaker/victim...

A slave is traded for something, be it gold pieces, minerals, food or, perhaps, even soldier(s) life. A slave therefor has a "dept", what one owes to the "owner". Slave is 'a slave' until he or she pays "the dept" to the owner - be it with work, with sharing knowledge(teaching) or engineering (buildings). Slaves who pay their dept to the owner become "thralls".

One can earn rank of "a slave" differently: Being bought/traded, being enslaved in war or breaking the laws. Should we let law-breakers free ? Should we leave enemies women and children to wild animals? Should we put them [law breakers] into metal cages or a dungeons, where they are no use and their soul will slowly "wither" away? In the dungeons[prisons], body weakens and both mind and soul are poisoned by hate. Should we ask them[criminals] money to pay for their deed, be it murder, rape, plunder or something else? We believe, that work keeps the body strong and in the strong body, there can be a strong soul.

The slaves we buy, are weakest, poorest, sickest - the cheapest. Weak mind, wounded body and broken soul are no good for anyone - but work can cure this. We do not whip our slaves. We do not use rope to tie them. We do not allow slaves to sleep outside (we provide them housing). We feed our slaves well, so they could work with full strength (We = the clan, not the owner). Every slave owner has to pay tax for their slave. Every slave has right for 12 hours of free time - they may do whatever they wish during that time (sleep, party, chat, learn, pray). If slave owner is cruel to his slaves, the slaves will be taken from him. However We do not believe, that slaves should be treated 'equal' to clan members, they are slaves, who have to prove their value to clan. Slaves may still marry and get kids, they still have basic rights (to live, to eat, to sleep, to talk, to be "unhealthy", to learn, etc.)!

Most of the people your Raiders called "slaves" were not slaves, but thralls. Thralls are not slaves, they are not owned by an individual owner. Thralls have right to own property. Thralls have to work for certain amount of time. They can work as anything. Thrall work is considered as: payment for food, care and protection they got from the clan when they were slaves/immigrants. And while doing the required work (certain amount of time, usually 12 years), some thralls also pick up the skills of the profession (smiths aid, will learn smithing in time). Only things that Thralls are not allowed to do is to leave from the clan and lead the Clan. However many of our advisors, engineers and magicans are human "thralls".

New individuals, who wish to join our clan, but are too unskilled and therefor have low value to the clan, become thralls. As thralls they will work to earn their place among the clan. Therefor it is justified to give "immigrants with no skill" the rank of "Thrall".

By this view, Children of the Clan can also be considered to be Thralls - they have the same rights. But children work for their parents as they grow up and pay their "dept" to the clan with work, just as thralls do. Once children reach the age of full grown, they may decide for themselves. Or, perhaps, are your children allowed to decide what they want themselves? They are allowed to ignore parents (and Clan) orders? Are your kids allowed to wander away from your kaer? Are you not feeding and protecting your kids, so they could do same for you? Do their parents not tell them, what they have to do(carrying water, preparing food, herding livestock)? You see, thrall is just a child of the clan - once "mature" thrall may do whatever he wishes to, even leave the clan ... - Just as a grow up can.

Our slaves live better than members of your "poor district". A slave owner does not own slave soul - but slave owes him (and the clan) a dept. Once this dept has been payed, the (ex)slave, may do whatever he or she wishes to do. Including join with our clan or leave. Work gives strength in all categories - be it body, mind or soul, it is strengthened by work.
Labor also "heals" mind of a criminal - an evil person can learn to work and live peacefully among others and dept that is payed with work is worth more than dept that is payed with stolen money/easily earned money.

Besides facts mentioned above, during the free time, many of the slaves work under smiths or craftsmen, learning the skills of their employer. Once talented enough, thralls/free people will become very valuable member of our (or other) communities.

We express sadness that You, our kin, have forgotten that work gives one a strong soul. You lock up (or kill?) the ones who break Laws. You ask money, a fee of sorts, from 'seasoned criminals' - even this fee will compensate for his deed, it will not ease criminal return to the society, his way will remain evil, as he knows no other way. You only weaken the soul of criminals and prisoners and create more evil to the world.

We believe that slavery is necessary to "cure" the criminal and his/her soul and prove that newcomer is not just after the treasury of the Clan but for good and honest life. We will not treat our slaves as poorly, as Patrians did. We Hope, that you'll soon come to understanding, that only way one society can exist, is to teach those who hate to work or break the laws, to love work and earn their place in the world.

We hope, that our different views, will not cause our friendship to wither --- we hope to Share ties of knowledge, trade and peace with you.

A question.

What does those little icons on the map mean?

cities, farms, and mines

Oh. I see what you mean. I thought those icons for mines were swords crossed over each other.

From the offices of foreign relations: Throal
To Morag the Ironwill and his Council

Your system of thralls and slaves is very different then the mass slaves raids of the Patrians. We thank killmorph for this.

Any raids upon sentient name-givers by your tribe or others for the express purpose of gaining slaves will not be looked upon kindly.

By the way, what happened to the Kaers after our city state/tribe/whatever social collective name you have chosen left it for the surface?

its up to you... i guess... but in many cases horrors would have been very attracted to the site as it would let them last a bit longer in this world... all those ancient wards and spells would draw their attention.

all stats are out

Fresh Water and other resources

Building next to a fresh water lake or on a river gives you +1 health (but prevents you from building an aqueduct city improvement).

Health +1
Note that while it normally costs 30 hammers, cities built on a river can build aqueducts for 10 hammers)
