When the American worker arose in revolt in 1921 and threw off his and her chains, the socialists of Europe were electrified. Volunteer companies were quickly formed to provide the American proletariat their aid. One of the largest and most influential hailed from Russia - the
Bakunin Legion (Бакунин Легион
, led by the Ukrainian Nestor Makhno. When the Bakunin Legion arrived on the American West Coast in 1921 after a harrowing six-month-long journey, they intended to support the workers of Seattle, who had reportedly arisen in open revolt against the Provisional Government. But that is not how the situation went - for the Legion had recieved bad intelligence, and Seattle had long been pacified.
But with revolutionary fervor at a climax, the Bakunin Legion, in conjunction with sympathetic militias from outside the city, assaulted the city of Portland in August 1922. Portland, in a pleasant surprise to its citizens, abruptly found its liberation at hand, and the Provisional Government's forces were caught totally unaware, and were forced to retreat. On 29 Thermidor 130 (17 August 1922), they declared Portland a "free city," its economy seized and run by its workers, and the subsequent formation of the "Pacific Free Territory."
Having secured a perimeter around Portland, as far away as Aberdeen, Washington, and into northern California, Bakunin's Legion, bolstered with increasing numbers of local volunteers, prepares for 1923.
