Welcome to the TSG58 After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state victory date and score (preferably in the post title), as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory!

STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed and submitted your game.

Please use the Civ5 game submission page to submit your final, first play through, .Civ5Save file, saved AFTER the victory ceremony if you were not conquered (using the "Lemme play one more turn" feature.).

- How many cities did you build and how many did you decide to acquire?
- How did you use religion or spying to your advantage?
- How did diplomacy go with your neighbors?
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
- Were your UA and UU helpful?
- Was your UB helpful?
- Did you save Social Policies, why did you do so and what affect did this have on your strategy?

Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences (please state if the game is a replay).

Would be interested to hear any thoughts on game setup. :)

Well that was a different game! I haven't won a cultural victory for months maybe even years prior to this game. I didn't really know what I was doing which is evident from the slow finish. Initially I planned to complete tradition, liberty, rationalism, patronage and freedom. The game did not turn out that way...

I settled in place and went for a form of 4 city tradition opening, tried and failed to get the Petra in Salzburg. Built a city near the GBR to try to improve science, which worked for a time (more on that later) and then built a city on the coast south of the capital.

Social policy order was something like open tradition, legalism, landed elite, monarchy then finished tradition and opened liberty. I still wasn't planning to go piety at this stage. So I then went citizenship and representation. I seemed to be pulling away in science at this stage, so I thought I wouldn't need rationalism so I opened piety and went down the middle through organized religion and reformation (I built a lot of wonders (again)) then took mandate of heaven, religious tolerance and finished piety with theocracy. After that I finished liberty went through freedom, accidentally opened commerce when I misclicked trying to decide what to take at some stage (I really wanted to load an autosave at this point, but managed to resist the tempation!) before finishing down the right side then left of commerce.

Ended up building 5 cities (4 at the start and 1 because I had to do something with the settler from collective rule). Puppeted 3 city states (didn't want to puppet the cultural ones) using the unique ability and conquered Wittenberg during 1 of 3 wars with the Iroquois. Discovered that if you sell a puppeted city state (mine was for peace with England they were destroying my south western border) that if you reconquer it at a later date they reDOWed about 15 turns later it becomes a normal city without being able to make a choice.

Religion:
I went Goddess of the hunt (lots of elephants) to grow.
Tithe
Cathedrals
Religious Art
Itinerant preachers

Maybe I should have gone with the city state bonuses. I wanted to get religious texts but the Iroquois beat me to it by 1 turn!
I purchased some great artists and great prophets with faith after building the few cathedrals.

Tried to use artist specialists everywhere, but eventually found that I wasn't generating enough science so had to add more scientists at the expense of artists.

Diplomacy worked well for the first 100 turns or so then I had both the Iroquois and the English double DOW me on at least 3 separate occasions, same turn each time). Egypt, Persia, Byzantium and France were all friendly, while they survived England killed Byzantium quite early then Egypt and Persia killed France later on. Greece was initially friendly  but that soon changed when I reneged on a deal to invade the Iroquois because they had allied Geneva during the 10 turn period and I didn't want a 2 front war.

The Iroquois built the great wall between wars 1 and 2 against them. So I used a second citadel to open a path to their GW city to help capture it. Around turn 230 I suddenly realised that I was being caught and overtaken technologically by both England and the Iroquois with England building all but one of the spaceship parts by the time I finished the last social policy that I needed. Thankfully they hadn't managed to research the final tech they needed. The reason that I fell behind was that they had used rationalism and obviously I hadn't. When I noticed them passing me I activated as many science specialists as I could and just about kept up (I was about 2 techs behind at the end).

Spying wise I started in a couple of enemy civs then switched to the city states to try to ally them so I could puppet them. Fell behind in tech so moved them back to enemy states and used them for unit/building recon from that stage as it was taking ages to steal techs.

UA used it a few times although I am not entirely sure if it was worth it, I may have just been using it because I could. The first time I did this I was not expect such a large happiness hit for puppeting a city state and that brought growth to a stand still for a number of turns.

UU this was useful on a couple of occasions for grabbing cities after artillery had taken them down to 1 health its extra speed was helpful. I didn't really have enough other units to take advantage of the flank attack and I didn't even realise that it had extra sight until I looked at what made it unique just now.

The UB came a bit later than I would have liked (I forgot to beeline it), but I think it still helped to generate great people.

I did not save social policies.

Overall, I think that it would have been better if I had built a second scout early on in order to meet the extra city states. I considered it but decided not to as there were no ancient ruins. I also thought it was continents for a quite a while.

An early warring approach with puppets would probably have been faster, but I have always preferred peaceful games (except the scenarios, does anyone know if the nerf to the Western Roman legion due to the change to privateers was intended, it makes tactics on the Fall of Rome scenario really tough). Sorry about the off topic excursion.

I am sure almost everyone will finish in fewer turns than it took me, but I still had fun. I had a lot of wasted golden age left over at the end, I hit a natural one as well getting 2 great artist just after the last policy completed.

What map script was it?

Not great. I still haven't really figured out how to win cultural victories at anything other than a glacial pace. Also, it seems like Austria's Diplomatic Marriage ability is not likely helpful in a cultural victory, but perhaps I'm missing something.

Relatively straightforward game. I did Tradition and Liberty openers, then finished Tradition, then Piety, then Freedom, finished Liberty, and then ended on City States. I moved the settler to the awesome spot E-NE of the river and discovered that was even better than I'd hoped.

Founded a second city southeast of the capital, along the river, and a third city on the south coast in the middle of the big resource cluster. All that ivory made me rich in trades with happy neighbors.

But I was not allowed to go peacefully. I tried to start a religion but it got completely swamped by prophets and I never even established it in my own capital! I had picked all the cultural bonus traits too. Oh well.

The Iroquois were psychotic and kept attacking me from the east. That wall of mountains made it easy for me to beat them off even with a vastly outnumbered defensive force, and I pretty much ignored them. A large English force attacked my southern city and it got a bit exciting for a moment, but I swept my army down and drove them off, eventually taking and puppeting Canterbury on the river, southwest of my capital. They surrendered lots of cash to me, and the Iroquois briefly made peace.

Then Byzantium, the English, and the Iroquois all attacked me simultaneously. At this point the Byzantines and English were non-threats given my tech lead and well-guarded borders (city-state shields!) and I took a Byzantine colony founded near me and puppeted it. They and the English quickly surrendered. But the Iroquois kept attacking... and I noticed that the Greeks were destroying them from behind!

Surely they would make peace with Greece eliminating them from the game? Nope. Despite not a single provocation, the Iroquois hurled themselves to their deaths on my defensive line, never getting a single unit close to one of my cities. Finally Greece put them out of their misery.

Time passed, and then Alexander caught the crazy bug from the dead Iroquois and declared war on me three times, each time accomplishing absolutely nothing, eventually suing for peace. He controlled 11 city-states, I controlled 7 (all the cultural ones and a few more), so every time this happened there was a minor world war. I built some caravels to do a bit of exploring but they were killed by random Greek naval units. Finally, during the third war (in which the Greeks had clear air superiority and even some tech lead on me, but STILL couldn't bust through my lines), I sent a group of battleships to take a coastal city just get him to surrender. It didn't work, but I did capture the city.

The game was closer than I thought as Egypt was finishing up its fifth policy tree as I built the Utopia Project, but in the end, my main fear was Alexander would nuke me! But he did not.

The End.

I stuck with a single city the entire game, settled 2 to the east of the start.

For religion, I took Goddess of the Hunt, Interfaith Dialogue, Religious Community, Divine Inspiration, and Reliquary. I got beat to Cathedrals, Pilgrimage, Religious Art, and Desert Folklore, but I think this worked out well enough.

For wonders, I built Stonehenge, Petra, Chichen Itza, the Oracle, Terracotta Army, Hagia Sophia, Alhambra (GE rushed), Angkor Wat, Sistine Chapel, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Taj Mahal, the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and Brandenburg Gate (GE rushed), in that order.

I earned 2 great engineers from engineer points (the wonders did that) and 7 great artists from artist points. I really think the coffee house helped; a total 125% extra point generation does not hurt (garden, national monument, leaning tower of pisa, freedom opener, coffee house). The hussar was able to do some damage, even against the Infantry Hiawatha threw at me, which was also nice. The UA saw no use in this game.

Counting the 3 from wonders and 1 from Liberty, along with 3 from faith, I got 14 great artists total. I planted 10 of them and used four to create golden ages. I also got 1 from happiness, 1 from the Taj Mahal, and 2 from policies, for 8 golden ages (122 turns of golden age, 96 of which were at the end). I also planted my third great prophet.

My city ended up size 34, with 252 beakers per turn (105 from city states), 890 culture per turn (125 from city states, 51 from happiness), and 93 faith per turn (32 from city states). In the city, there was 123 culture from terrain, 61 from buildings, 32 from policies (Constitution), and 12 from specialists. With all modifiers and a golden age, this is multiplied by 313% to make 714 culture. I was working on the technology of Flight when the game ended.

For policies, I took aristocracy, then started saving. Then I took Mandate of Heaven and organized religion. I saved Reformation so that I could build Chichen Itza during a golden age. I used Oracle on Religious Tolerance. I finished out Tradition and started saving again. I got to Industrial with Scientific Theory, which I used Oxford to get. I was able to buy 4 out of 6 policies in Freedom, and I got the other two within 10 turns. I then finished Piety, took Scholasticism and Aesthetics, took Representation for a Golden Age, finished Liberty for a Great Artist, and finally finished Patronage on turn 292. I built Utopia in 8 turns. I only had an artillery for overflow, but it saved at least one turn.

Greece started the game denouncing me but ended up my friend. I was declared on by Elizabeth at least 4 times, but beat them back each time. At the end of the game I had a triple DOW from Hiawatha, Elizabeth, and Theodora. Hiawatha had planes but did not build enough of them to be a real problem. I took the nearest city with artillery and then gave it back to Hiawatha in a peace deal. I got truce with all of them before finishing Utopia.

I left my first spy in my capital for a while to limit the chance of getting competition for wonders. After that, I used them to secure the cultural city states.

Overall it was a fun game. The Coffee House is a nice unique building, not just for the 25% great people generation but also for the 5% production modifier, which works on more than just buildings. The Hussar and the UA aren't bad either, even if I never used the UA. Policy saving was also a nice change-up. It was a bit of a challenge to keep up in a one-city culture victory on Emperor, but I managed. The only wonder I got beat to, while building it, was the Forbidden Palace. I credit my tech path, production, and use of a golden age for Chichen Itza and a GE for Alhambra for that.

Crap, lost on emperor... Obviously my mistake was going OCCish :hammer2: (some puppeting mostly of CS). Did not get Louvre (forgot to go for it) and Oracle, other than that basically all I wanted, Great Wall has proven to be very helpful. I was in the scientific average most of the game and still went for Piety. When Darius won SV I still needed about 50 turns for a win... But the end game was quite fun, I sent around 6-7 nukes, unfortunately only had 2 uranium. For Sydney I had to annex a city state, but it was still worth it. And for the first time I got nuked! From 35 pop to 19... I think I didn't even realize it the turn it happened though... For almost 100 last turns I had to fight on 3 fronts and almost the whole game with Hiawatha. Fun, though.

I settled on the desert hill east of the starting position. Hoped it would be a monster Petra city, but later after building city I realised that it is not enough desert hills. However I was lucky with scouting with my warrior. I went north and found Wittenberg and later Geneva so I founded Pantheon very fast (t12). Took desert folklore, tithe, cathedrals, Religious Art and Itinerant Preachers.

First I though to stay with one city but later, after some scouting I decided to build the second one after NC. Got GL in t45 and NC around turn 57. Completed Petra in t77, and was first to found religion in t85. Built Salzburg very late, in t94. Hiawatha was very close and I expected DOW from him but fortunately the whole game he was busy with Alex and I was relatively safe. I almost forgot to build Oracle :) but I did it after completing Tradition. Then I took aesthetics to have free friendship with CS. Later I made my first great mistake. I wanted to be clever and save culture only for 6 freedom policies, but I miscalculated culture for policies and took to many Piety things. Later I completed freedom -> Piety (without theocracy) -> finished Patronage -> finis Piety -> Commerce.

The game was quiet. Almost all the game I have tech lead. Later runaway Napoleon was teching had to had with me. However, I delayed public schools quite a lot going for Louvre (used Oxford to get Archaeology) and museum first and didn't use gold for RAs. I missed Alhambra, but I tried it very late (after Sistine Chapel). Elizabeth likes my Salzburg visited the city many times beginning at t155. Between wars she was a friendly and good trade partner. Finally I expected Napoleon to backstab me but I finished before.

Probably could finish some turns earlier as I start buying GA too late and finally settled last two GAs very late when I saw my GA would last long enough. The Iroquois capital seems to be an ideal place for Petra city but I don't think I could catch it fast enough. On the other hand, I am completely sure if I kill the Iroquois I would fight with Alex.

Overall it was a nice game.

Not a great finish time. I didnt micro manage the culture buildings acquisition very well not to mention early wonders in my capitol, nor a very good social policy order. Hence, I got this mess of a game. I built four cities and decided to acquire just about all of the other cities on the map. I had a pretty strong religion, so I used Papal Primacy, I had good FPT so I used Great prophets to erase the other religions and install mine. Diplomacy with religions was one sided in my favor, I erased all the others. The difficulty level let me relax my defenses a bit. The UA was nice because I married a military CS early and used the men to take Egypt. The UU is nice, fast and strong, they eat enemy shooters. UB not too helpful I am afraid. I did not save any policies.

Tradition+Patronage+Honor+Autocracy+Piety all mixed together.

- How many cities did you build and how many did you decide to acquire?

I built 2 cities, one near desert near starting position and one to the south-west near the flood plains. I aquired and puppetted Budapest with diplomatic marriage pretty early. Then aquired and pupetted another city-state near Thebes after Egypt attacked me and counter-attacked with the army that gave me, eventually conquering Thebes. Finished with these 5 cities.

- How did you use religion or spying to your advantage?

Religion was a great advantage. I could spread it early and wide (thanks to desert folklore and later religious texts) and got a lot of gold from Tithe.

- How did diplomacy go with your neighbors?

Friend with Iroquois and French for the whole game, and with Byzantium for most of the game. That helped for keeping relatively peaceful game and doing research agreements.

- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?

I didn't try to build early wonders, started with Oracle. Also I was careful to keep a reasonable force of archers in the early game, just in case.

- Were your UA and UU helpful?

Diplomatic marriage was great, permitted me to acquire military units quick and easy, and a couple of puppet states add to culture without too much drawbacks.

Hussars were great! They helped me a lot in my attack of Egypt, taking down crossbowmen and great generals and retreating in the same turn.

- Was your UB helpful?

I guess so, it helped produce more great artists which I settled near the capital.

- Did you save Social Policies, why did you do so and what affect did this have on your strategy?

No I didn't save them -- it always felt like there was a policy which I wanted immediately.

finished t248.

almost happy with the game, made a few major mistakes that cost me dearly though:

not buying public school in 2nd city delayed radio by about 8 turns - equals about 8 turns earlier finish i guess, i just forgot about it.

i was indecisive about whether to conquer hiawatha or not, in the end i didnt manage to with 3 cbows and spear because of his 30% ranged pantheon... if i had been able to get it before arch, it wouldve been helpful (for science), afterwards i just didnt bother anymore.

first great prophet spawning at 294 faith gotta be kidding me.. delayed cathedrals by about 10 turns.

didn't manage to hold my GA till the end, stupidly placed another landmark instead which was not worth it at all.

and last but not least, napoleon building himeji cost me about 5 turns of prebuilding, and about 2 turns for utopia. ended up 14 hammers short of t247.

all in all still ok game, what really bothered me was having woltk for whales (nobody ever had them except persia and they hated me...) so i could never get it and really really unlucky quests for cultural cs.

i reckon 220 is quite possible, i played really well till 150s, then very poorly.

Couldn't find really good expo spots, so decided to go OCC.

played tommynt style. bought worker fast after meeting several CS and iroquis and took one iroquis worker. Those two worked near capital till like t100. Didn't get a worker from CS.

religion: desert forklore - tithe - cathedral - 15% prod - 30% further.

SP order: traditio opener - legalism - landed elite - 15% wonder - monarchy - tradition full (t70) - pat till scholar - piety till 10% reduction (oracled last one) - saved policty till indust era - open freedom and constitution (t152) - freedom full - piety full - liberty open - pat and liberty fill.

Since I decided to play aggresively, I took lump sums and bought 4-5 archers and 2 warriors. First given warrior went west after meeting wittenberg and met 2nd religious CS (lucky, got DF fast) and met several CS and egypt, france, persia. Whenever I met other civs, I spot a chance to steal a worker and used it to scout a bit and deleted.

Bribed greece to DoW iroquis and france to egypt and persia continuously. I DoWed a lot too. As I sacrificed lux trading and RA, I really needed sci. so my key decision was scholar SP choice. I did lots of CS quests so I had 6-7 allies (including 4 culture ones) and 4-5 friends by t80. Instead of aesthetics, I went for philanthropy and scholar. right after edu, my spt was like 80 from cap and 25 from CS, so it was totally worth it.

I detoured to machinery (for Xbows and ironworks) and beelined to arch (t152, 1 GS and oxford). I think I got radio around t185 - scholar helped a lot again, and I burned 2 GS (1 from pisa, 1 from por tower).

around t125, I decided to marry budapest (nice position, had 4 pikes and 3 CBs). upgraded my own 3 CBs also and went for egypt. budapest had all buildings so sci, hammer, and gold was decent too. took egypt, byz, and england cap pretty quick. After that, went west and took 1-2 cities from persia and france, and good peace deal. also took iro cap and sparta later. After that, I got bored and just clicked next turn - didn't bother killing rest.

pre-building worked well this time - 4 turns for utopia.

could have saved 1 turn if I was more careful and placed landmark faster (about 40 culture short for the last one). Also, after filling pat CS gave me GA, but too late - I already burned GA to make sure I am in golden age till utopia finish.

cap BO: monument - scout - granary (around t15 worker bought) - GL - NC - HG (watermill bought) - Petra - CI - wonders. just wonders. bought other buildings like univ, workshop, opera house, etc., immediately.

attached 3 screenshots.

I am not familiar with the trick -- how did you manage to build utopia in 4 turns :crazyeye:

I forgot the link, but I am pretty sure you can find one quick by looking at previous gotm threads. For example, take a look at the 1st screenshot I uploaded.

It was the worst of times, it was the best of times... it was the times of having your "friendly" ally stab you in the back with a vengeance.

Ok, I expected Greece to DOW as soon as they were able. I expected Egypt and Hiawatha to also. But I didn't expect a late-game Theodora to DOW on me.

I really was doing ok right up until the modern age. I took Hiawatha's cities and Greece finished off their capital. I took 4 of Elizabeth's cities when she DOW'd me. I fought off two, count 'em, two separate wars where Greece and Egypt DOW'd me at the same time! But at the end, when I had had enough, I finally went with a DOW of my own on Greece. I was going to wipe them off the map. But no. Theodora DOW'd me. And so I retired. Knowing that she was already into infantry and bombers while I still had GWI and Triplanes. I suppose I could have tried but I was tired of war. Would rather read through the AARs on here and try a new game.

Aside from the perma-war I may have made the mistake of saving policies after the tradition opener and the 10% off policies from Piety. Then I got all but one of the Freedom policies when I hit industrial. Didn't seem to really help my culture output.

Perhaps I should have gone wide instead of tall. I just had my capital and tons of puppet cities.

Good game.

I played some mp last year and played with some of the people on the list. I heard that not that many people play in that site anymore - maybe I got the wrong info.

For this gotm, it would be helpful if you can post positions of your 4 cities - I could not find good spots so I went OCC.

I'm only about 50% on Emperor level, meaning I lose as often as I win. This one I held on all down the stretch, but chickened out and took a diplo victory rather than risk defeat.

Hiawatha had all but 2 space ship parts. Ramses had enough social policies to fill 5 trees, but had inexplicably started on a sixth instead of just finish the 5th. Otherwise he was 2 sp's ahead of me. (I was 3 sp short of enabling the Utopia Project at the end). Persia had as many sp as me.

The problem for me was all the backstabbing and warring. I guess I did not keep a strong enough military to deter that nonsense... just strong enough to win 2-3 puppets each time I got attacked. Just let them smash themselves against cities before counter-attacking.

I thought I did pretty good diplomatically, by getting war allies each time I was attacked, except at the end when I got dogpiled, but only one of them could reach me so same result... more puppets.

Plenty of cash to spare at the end. In the early game I puppeted 4 city states... didn't realize on the first one what a hit I'd take in happiness. But managed to make by with some trades and buildings purchases, and some wonders.

The war preparedness meant I had to keep science rate up. Pause to work on culture and I get attacked. So not much beelining. Fortuitous tech stealing helped a lot.

My biggest mistake was in policy decisions. The top row minus Honor, and Commerce. Without freedom, I couldn't buy grate artists.

I almost gave up this game for lost, but decided to give it a shot at diplo. Took about 30 turns to build the UN, and I had zero city state allies when I started. All but one allied when the spies start doing coups all over the place with 2t to go. Fortunately, 4 of the AI (3 of whom were at war with me less than 10 turns ago) votes for me, and I got 11 votes. Why they do that, I don't know... but I'll take the win, even if it isn't the intended kind of win.

Ramses had like 20 wonders in Thebes. I suppose I should have taken it, but there was always something more important (its hard to drain the swamp when I'm up to my ears in alligators). Ramses is the WORST opponent to face when going for culture, imo. Oracle and Sistines and Terracotta were the only culture-focus wonders I got. I got lots of fail-gold, though.

There was one AI I never met, I think. Weird. Alex died... maybe someone liberated him when I didn't notice? Lets see... Persia, Egypt, Greece, Iroquois, English, Byzantine. Was there someone else in there too???

dont wana drag this into a mp thread but answering this 1:
there just are few "pro" players in civ5, and non pro players just dont stand even a slim chance vs league players - so bad ones might get frustrated fast and rather go into the open games or the scrap group and quit or "scrap" each time things dont go their way.

For me: Quality over quantity

there just are few "pro" players in civ5, and non pro players just dont stand even a slim chance vs league players - so bad ones might get frustrated fast and rather go into the open games or the scrap group and quit or "scrap" each time things dont go their way.

For me: Quality over quantity
Correct, enough MP. Please take it to the MP forum.

What to say.... Was a cool game until t180 around, even if falling behind some of our best players, I was still on track to clock in between 290 and 310. I started to feel lack in science, but got prod under control (see post in progress thread), and then

all hell broke loose. Hiawatha & Theodora declared on the same turn on me. Theo was friends all game, nothing in red in relation. Still don't get it. Fighting the runaway was kind of long uphill battle, they both basically ganged up on me. Took out 3 CS pretty fast, that was a LOT of cpt down the drain. Managed to hang on by a thread....

In the end, when starting utopia, made peace deals (both had finished manhattan project) so gave Wittenberg to hiawatha and a lot of gold to Theo.

Finished Utopia

Was kind of a hard game, lacked resources (coal, oil, Aluminium,...)

Will def play again with Austria to see what u can get out of it. Was my first game ever with them.

Anyway, happy to have snatched a (small) victory from the jaws of defeat

Ugg, Hiawatha and Theodora were aggressive little rats. I started one war with Hiawatha @ t150 and took 5 cities from him to expand my area and give me a decent border for my 3 cities.

They both started a war @ 270 and were aggressive, but I held them off via artillery and hussars and managed to close out the war without losing my cities.
