I was astonished when see than unarmed colonists have the same strength as soldiers (but have no free promotions and can only defend). So iI made pretty nice 'strategy' for war - use many unarmed colonists.

And guess? If you have 10 fortified colonists in your colony you can see that they have str 3 + fortification bonus, all nice.... Except attackers must defeat only one of then to capture colony.

I didn't see anything about it in colonizopedia.

I see no reason at all to show colonists strength on the map. It's just confusing.
I now see no reason in 'Right to bear arms' choice.

wtf?
In Col1 it was intuitive that unarmed colonists are not an army becouse thay had str=0. But now it's not clear at all.

I assume that the developers assumed that probably every unarmed colonist had a gun for self-defence at that time ...

However if you consider the differences between unarmed colonists and armed soldiers their combat-strength seems unbalanced :
+ soldiers are equipped with new (additional?) guns
+ soldiers should have better training (drill)
+ soldiers work more efficiently in a group (clear leadership)

Personally I don't like the concept of colonists with combat-strength at all ... I would like to see them as in Col1 ... I hate to kill colonists when attacking another european settlement ... they are supposed to surrender when they are outnumbered ...

(The system of units and professions is a little bit confusing. Each colonist may either work in a settlement and then must have an in-colony-profession (e.g.Farmer) or it may be outside and then must have an outside-profession (e.g. Colonist, Scout, Soldier, Dragoon, Missionary) The Combat-Strength is a feature of the Profession "PROFESSION_COLONIST". It has the attributes :

<Combat>UNITCOMBAT_MELEE</Combat>
<bCityDefender>1</bCityDefender>
<iCombatChange>2</iCombatChange>

So Combat-Strength of a olonist should be Combat-Strength of unit + iCombatChange.)

Alright, this has to stop. If you are going to compare the games, at least make sure to get your fact straight first. Colonists had a str=1 in the original, in fact I've lost MANY artilleries trying to capture colonists. They couldn't attack though.

Oh yes, I'd mistake there.

So what's the rule? You can use any colonist as a defensive garrison without supplying them with guns?

Also, the OP says:

Except attackers must defeat only one of then to capture colony.
Is that true?

That is not my experience.

The only thing I noticed is that colonists defend last (so injured cannon or solider would still defend before colonist).

I checked again just now.

If there are few colonists fortified in colony, they will rotate, defending colony while alive. So it looks like all of them defends colony. But when first of them die, colony is lost.

Also I noticed that sometimes colonists working in colony takes muskets and become soldiers (permanent!) while fortified outside just stand at place. I didn't understand pattern, through - sometimes they take muskets, sometimes not. Sometimes even 2 colonists at once take muskets...

Strange it all.

Nope. While having descend strength they are cowards - fight well while winning, but first defeat breaks their hearts
(joke)

really - no, you can't rely on fortified stack of unarmed colonist - first defeat will result in losing settlement.

I think the Kill 1 and win is covered in the Civlopedia under Game Concepts\Combat\Victory or Defeat:

"If there are any non-combat units present, the attacker will fight one of them. If the attacker wins it will capture all non-combat units."

Presumably non-soldier/Dragoon/Cannon/ship units are non-combat ? I have even had a "Treasure" unit kill my Dragoon as I tried to capture it (didn't realize it would fight back after I'd taken out my opponent's soldier escort).
