Specialist Economy - are you guys really buying this?

This depends alot on cicrumstance, in general the more aggressively you pursue a domination win the more valuable having the next tech now is whereas the longer the game lasts the better the payoff of "later". In specific circumstances having the payoff sooner may pay off in the long run - if...

    GOTM-02: First Spoiler:

tbh, looking back I am a little surprised as well, probably in too much of a rush to properly evaluate the sites. wrt York I guess, as you said, I just wanted acess to the copper sooner, though this was not really important in practice. I had hoped to eventually add a second city picking up...

    GOTM-02: First Spoiler:

I have noticed the potential of selling techs to backwards civs for 200-300 gold every few turns :mischief:.

    Most hated civ?

Rome. Caesar is to date the only person to attack me in the ancient era (and he nearly won thanks to his praetorians). Honourable mention for the crusader Isabella though.

    GOTM-02: First Spoiler:

This is my first gotm. I have played successfully at Prince level before though and didn't anticipate too many problems in winning my game. I tend to vary my approach between peaceful builder and aggressive warmonger games. In this case I took what I regard at the 'safe' option and decided to...

"A Big Vision for Civilization 4"

I agree wholeheartedly that Civ4 is a much better game than Civ3 and note that some of the improvements bare an uncanny similarity to ideas proposed your document :). Looking back, the most fun I had with Civ3 was when I was still poor at the game and could lose at something approaching...

    Hatshepsut fan club?

And she was so because Alexander was before her. Though they were both ethnic Greeks.

Point of Information: Organized Trait doesn't cut City Maintenance Upkeep by 50%

The only no upkeep civic you can have is slavery. The savings on the rest must amount to something.

    Suggestion: "No Island Start"

Good idea, being alone on an island is a huge disadvantage on higher difficulties where you need tech trading to keep up with the AI hive mind.

    General imperialism, personality or bug

The AI will often attack you if your power score is low relative to theirs. Regarding the repeatability of the attack, perhaps the AI had been waiting on researching guilds so that he could send knights at you?

What is the first thing you build?

Any of warrior/scout/worker depending on starting techs and whether the worker would have anything to do by the time he is completed.

A small reason not to move starting settler

Yet the only strategy I have seen posted for beating deity at standard settings relies on the potential advantages of a coastal start ;) . http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=148242

Should ICS have been killed??/maintenance too high??

I agree that the system is good. The op states that he is breaking even at 20-30%. This seems reasonable given that he will surely soon outpace the AI with so many cities (or maybe not - I haven't played Immortal so feel free to correct my ignorance).

Killing an AI CIV very early – more damage than profit?

I think you are absolutly right. You will need the tech hive mind to compete.
