Your first screenshot I would settle right above the horse. Because you get horse corn and fur. Also fur almost always comes in a cluster.

Best thing to do is get 5 settlers and just settle the uninhabited island. Once you do that make it a colony. Have the colony research one thing while you research something else.

I open borders with everyone. Once I have open borders I build a couple of scouts and just set them on auto explore. Once I have explored everything I scout out units.

While flood plains are nice your city would be so unhealthy you would only get 1 pop. And even if you had the health bonuses you would need like 4 workers just for improvements because flood plains are desert. Really I would rather have 21 river grassland tiles with a couple corn.
