Yeah, they never seem to do it. I can't even remember a time an AI wanted to trade for some strategic resources either. Those they would probably need from time to time...
I haven't figured out how to do it yet. But it would have been very useful in yesterday's game as England, to mark which Ship of the line had which upgrade.

If the unit's life hangs on a thread, or I don't want to loose momentum in a big push, I use it. But normally not. Usually there is plenty of time to heal.
I always do it. If nothing else, it's always fun to cleanse the land of the huge amounts of barbarians that always inhabit it at the time you reach it. Plus, it feels neat to have a little continent of your own.
