Does anyone else name their units?

I am playing as the Iroquois and I have recently started naming some of my units, mainly my naval ships.

I have the battleship IS (Iroquois Ship) Sitting Bull, the battleship IS Geronimo, the destoryer IS Crazy Horse, the destroyer IS Cochise, etc.

Ideally I'd like to name each ground unit with the name of the production city and the game turn, however I don't have time and it would get boring.

I'll do it sometimes when I'm in the mood to role play my Civ. Mostly though, I just name units that stand out for some reason like those with Medic or Sentry promotions. Also, any unit that gets 4 promotions I will name Veteran so I know who my 'A' team is. If I have a UU that upgrades into more modern units, like the Janissary, I will name it after the original unit it started as so I remember its unique capabilities. One thing I would love to be able to do is name my Nukes, just for fun.

I did used to do this in Civ4 sometimes, but I haven't in Civ5 yet. I probably will sometime, though. A lower number of units in Civ5 lends itself to unit naming a bit more, I guess.

I haven't figured out how to do it yet. But it would have been very useful in yesterday's game as England, to mark which Ship of the line had which upgrade.

Umm, so how do you rename a unit?

I believe it's only on promotion.

I sometimes name units for purpose. So a swordsmen, riflemen that I have been promoted with the Amphibious promotion I name Marine, Amphibious, or something like that. Someone that got the Cover promotion is called 'Guards'.
Ships I sometimes name after real ships, if playing US, Russia, UK, etc (if I know the names of the ships for that nation). Once (In Civ IV) I named all my ships DD-1, DE-1 (a destroyer with escort purpose only), CG-1, BB-1 and so on.

I name them occosianally but can never seem to come up with good names anymore. However as the Americans I had some (I thought) good ones. 3 minutemen named freedom company, liberty company, and honor company, with 3 cannon freedom's hammer, liberty's hammer, and honor's hammer.

I don't name every unit but rather the units who do very well in combat and shall be remember by my civilization. For example a unit that was critical in the defence of a city in a war may get named (city name)'s guardians, or heros of (city name). I feel like this is something that has carried over with me from civ3 where you could name a unit after it produced a leader. Once a unit did that i usually allowed them to retire to a fortress hill deep in my territory where they remained fortified for the rest of the game.

I used to name my ground units in Civ4 pretty often (usually after a battle or some other event that they'd taken part in and performed well in).

Don't really do it as often in CiV, but occasionally when I feel the need....

If I'm the French I'll start naming my units from musketmen onwards as 1er DI (division d'infanterie), 2e DI, 3e DI, etc. with my artillery named similarly.

Otherwise, I don't care much.

I can never remember to do it before I promote. Doesn't matter though, because no matter what they say about "a unit will mean so much more to you in V," they're all disposable and not really worth keeping track of in the end.

I'll grant it would be damn nice if you could rename a unit whenever you wanted, and it is damn stupid that you can't, for those who would actually have the patience to try keeping track of their "Batman Squad" paratroopers or what the crap ever. No idea why the devs had to decide for us that a unit wasn't worth naming if it didn't get a promotion (and a player who actually remembered to give the name that instant).

I name every unit. I usually don't lose units, so there's a lot of opportunity (lots of promotions).

Especially the scouts that hit goody-huts and turn into bowmen. Either 1st Rangers, or 1st Commandos if they've already promoted to x3 movement.

I will restart if I don't get at least one scout-bowman. :)
