How is AI with naval activity?

So after shelving Civ5 in horror for about 6 months, I decided to come back and give it another try. I've only played one game so far (I play slow games, epic or marathon/huge map) but while the AI seemed somewhat competent at fighting on land, I don't think I saw any civ take a city from another landmass.

Is this a one-game anomaly, or are you still required to play on Pangaea to give the AI a decent chance? I'd really love to be able to keep using the Perfect World script...

AI Combat ability is still waaaay low. Which is to be expected. Improvement will come with the release of the core code.

They just don't seem to build a big enough navy more then anything. I normally keep 3-6 ships depending on the map and I always have naval control. I think their biggest problem is invading overseas. I haven't seen them do it once and succeed

Invading over seas is silly in this game... military troops should be considered civilians on the ocean so that they can sit under your boats, its rediculously hard to protect your units crossing the seas... I had the computer try to land on my continent with a dozen infantry in one shot and 2 destroyers but my 3 destroyers made very short work of them.

I've seen one AI be successful against another AI in landing troops protected by destroyers then using destroyers and landed artillery to reduce city defences and then capturing the city with infantry. I've only seen it once in 600+ hours however, but couldn't have played the 217 patch for more than 200 hours.

You need to create a corridor of ships to protect troops in the water between quite close landmasses and a box of ships to contain troops in the water over greater distances. In this way it works perfectly. It isn't really any more difficult or time consuming now to move troops over water than it was in Civ4. You just need a slightly different approach and be prepared to move each unit in tern.

I would say it's more time consuming, that being said I don't have much experience with Civ IV transports... what I don't like with this system is you cant have your troops path properly, so every turn you need to move them, it's annoying when there is a large ocean between continents.

I usually play Pangea or inland sea so it's not a big deal for me.

Nowaways, after the last patch or two, I've seen positive surprises, like naval units escorting embarked units, and bombarding coastal defensive units.

Same; playing on modern starts, I see the AI with combined arms fleets of destroyers, battleships and subs running around the ocean all together. They seem better at putting together an amphibious operation too

My fleet of one carrier, two destroyers and two battleships was destroyed by the AI!

Although their bombers and city bombardment helped as well, they surprised me. I saw a destroyer and two battleships coming but figured I could take them. Then came the subs

First time ever the AI actually sank any of my ships, and they actually took out the entire fleet. I'll have to use naval strategy now, this is good :goodjob:

I just fought Hiawatha and Elisabeth on a archipelago map. Hiawatha was pretty smart about it, he sent escorts with most of his bigger pushes. Elisabeth on the other hand insisted on sending a steady stream of lonely units right into my fleet. None of them even reached shore. So there exists some AI intelligence but it seems to not work most of the time.
