DMOC's Immortal Game #3: Julius Caesar

Thanks for the replies, DMOC. I'm not used to thinking of Mansa as a military power! I guess I was wrong on the power/factories numbers too. Apologies.

No axes, barb swords, what to do?

Is there any possibility of luring a sword off with a worker? You'd have better chances with two archers and a warrior vs three swords than vs four, of course...but I don't know if the barbs would kill a worker before attacking the city.

DMOC's Immortal Game #3: Julius Caesar

I'm not sure what the second mod is, but DMOC is using BUG, which you can download here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=274636 and I'm pretty sure it just gives you an .exe file that you'd run like any normal program installation. Anyway, on the game: glad to see you took...

DMOC's Immortal Game #3: Julius Caesar

Read up this game today. Good stuff! My current Emperor game as JC, I basically crushed two civs to the extreme detriment of my economy and got nationalism with liberalism, almost to rifling. Hoping to draft + upgrade my praets to take on a good-sized Cathy. Hope it goes as well as your game has!

RL Question: How old are you & What do you do

I'm 17, starting at Oregon State University this fall term (I move in 9 days from now)! Going for a computer science degree. I've been playing since Civ 3, so at least 5 years, off and on.

    Why...thank you, Saladin!

I like this assumption. I'll be using it.

    Game Speed

Well, on quicker game speeds units move relatively slower (since their speed doesn't change but everything else speeds up). This would be true for any map size, so I'd say go with whatever map size you prefer.

    City Site Selection

I would just like to reiterate what was said earlier - look for food resources. My favorite city spots are food + hills (production city) or grassland (or plains + food) river for commerce city.

    So how realistic IS Civ?

The Rhye's and Fall seems to do a very good job of realism. Stability is freaking annoying though, and as fun as it is to play for historical goals, when my pan-European Germany empire collapses due to 'instability' it's really not fun anymore. That's when I go back to unmodded Civ. Also, I...

    Laptops?

My laptop specs 2 gigs ram windows xp t7250 dual core (2.4 ghz) 8600 gt m video card Runs great (I played BTS, standard or large maps, though huge is fine). Of course modern age comp turns take a while, but it's still smooth in my turns. I got this off the dell site for $800 during a $500 off...

    Espionage defense for casual player

Also, putting spies in your own cities greatly increases the chances of catching rival spies.

Is there any way to reduce loading times between turns?

Well, I also only have 512 mb of RAM, but I have a 2.97 GHz processor, and I don't experience much more than a 10 second wait between turns ever until the middle ages. Although I'm sure more RAM would help as well.

    War Advice

One option, if you can upgrade troops but don't have the money, is drop your research to little or none for a few turns, use the gold to upgrade, and then get back to it. Not sure if that fits the situation though.

    Cats ftw

I agree that they SHOULD take collateral, but they don't need to be nerfed more than that. This IS the first major siege weapon in history, it makes sense that it's pretty powerful.
