I think it was the result of a aluminum unit being gifted to me by a City State. I'm pretty sure that there weren't any aluminum resources beneath cities.

Playing this game on an Earth map, standard size, without any mods. Immortal, Catherine, all DLC, standard speed. There is no aluminum on the entire map as shown in the save file with the map revealed by Satellites.
