Make an army. I had a game where I never got a great leader, couldn't make an army, and I was in deep crap!

I like playing India cause they got the War Elephant. This means that once I get Chivalry, I will usually start a war with my weakest neighbour. I'll get a few Elephants, get the golden age, and produce like crazy(wonders, units, everything)
