The thought was: "How would a game develop on a mostly desert world, with very view viable city-sites available?"
In general:
1. Most of the map is desert
2. Water sources are scarce, and not necessarily adjacent to viable city-sites
3. There are obvious city-sites available, some will...
You can also use the Right Mouse Button to move units around; i.e. press the button over an adjacent square and the unit will move onto it.
Painfully time-consuming, I agree, but useful if NumLock isn't an option!
Definitely worth it, particularly given it's very cheap to get hold of.
I would suggest you keep an eye out on eBay and similar marketplaces; there're normally 1 or 2 available (although I have to admit it's getting harder to find copies now compared to a few years ago).
You'll probably need to...
I've had a go at creating a civ map of The Palm Jumeira in Dubai - not played it myself yet so not sure how interesting it is from a game-play perspective. As you'll see, I've taken a few liberties with terrain-types; this is so it's not a purely desert map, which would be a bit of a drag...
I quite often play as the Mongols - yes, very boring I know. But I do try to come up with a new "Khan" to be the ruler. Some of the better ones are:
Squash players Jansher Khan and Jahangir Khan.
Boxer Amir Khan.
David Gemmell character Tanaka Khan.
And Chaka Khan of course.
Personally I would say the least appreciated unit is the Knight. Mainly because it's crap and pointless; only a marginal improvement on the chariot. To be honest I only ever get Feudalism/Chivalry when gifted/captured, or no other Advances are offered.
Most under-appreciated unit is...
Do you leave the cities there once created, or dissolve them after capturing the enemy city?
I quite often put cities on single-square stretches of land to act as a canal; most often a Panama Canal when playing on Earth, but have never done a multi-city canal.
I find the 'canal' is most...
Not as far as I'm aware; I think you're stuck with it one you've revealed the map.
If you prefer the "normal" minimap I would suggest only using the Shift56 cheat for initial map-scoping and checking-up on other tribes occasionally. Save before Shift56, peek, then exit and re-open Civ.
@erobinson32: I actually looked up who these people were that I was apparently matching in world-leadership circles. No way I would have learned about Simon Bolivar et al without Sid Meier's mentoring throughout my formative years!
Despite having played many other great games over the years...
I always linger too long in Despotism; makes it very easy to stamp my iron authority on the world but screws me up in every other respect.
My tendency is to switch to monarchy/communism (depending on how spread out I am) once I've subdued the other civs, then change to republic when I've...
btw, I should probably add that I reduce the screen resolution to the minimum crumbiest setting to run DOSBox, so it takes up as much space as possible (since full-screen doesn't work for me).
My gf's PC runs XP, and the original Civ runs fine on that without the need for DOSBox.
DOSBox works fine for me on Vista (well, as fine as anything works on Vista...), although it goes a bit funny when I try to go to full-screen. My theory is that it can't cope with my PC's screen being widescreen rather than the old-style 4:3.
@Dandenoth: The bonus tiles are positioned in almost a grid pattern. It is possible to move the grid around, but not the individual bonus tiles. I have to admit, if it was possible to add extra bonus tiles I would go totally crazy with Oasis everywhere.
You might want to look at the other...
