I'd agree, it's more about not getting bad luck than only playing with a few select civs. I wouldn't try facepalming with the Ottomans to get a first win, but theres definetly more than the top tier that can pull off solid wins as long as you play their strengths.

Did you shoot straight to philosophy after writing? Or did you bulb philo and hard tech some military? Having both built before turn 50 is pretty compelling, I have to admit I haven't played much of egypt myself since they're not warmonger civs.

UUs in early game on marathon dominate. By the time you get to your 3rd civ on deity on standard your bowmen are obsolete, if not the 2nd.

Focus on winning the game long before 2000 AD, if you're getting to future tech that late you won't have a chance on higher levels.

ToA is gone long before you grab a GE on deity, its a high priority for most AI, I've never managed to complete it once. Better strategy is to let them build it for you :) I'd agree that you can find a much better use for those hammers. I'm personally a huge fan of honor with the Iroquois...

I suppose you've never done a RA and had them declare on you several turns later to waste your gold? AI cheats too in that respect then ;) Not to mention....they get the same tech boost you do unless you snag PT. Mutual benefit isn't cheating is it?

I can see where you're coming from by not wanting to start below prince. Those levels IMO are mainly for learning what each building does and how units move, very quick learning curve, I haven't touched them myself either. My advice for you would be to work on essentially what Nightshades has...

I'd say that a bowman rush (have a look at wainy's youtube babylon for proof!) against a very close neighbor is a fantastic strategy to take a few cities, let alone just one :) Archer rushes got buffed last patch, Im finding an archer rush to be an opener quite often these days :)
