sometimes when the game gets a little too big for me, I'll just preset a list of items I want my cities to build. I have a good idea of what I want to build for the first 10-15 things. Shift + item will add them to the list.
This is a common tactic I do in order to gain more land/space. I'll build as close as possible, or build the same distance apart I would from one of my cities. Then I'll concentrate on culture for that city, even using the Great Artist to build "art" and increase the boundaries. Then the other...
I always try to give a few free "gifts" to some of the other civs, usually money. 10-40 every now and then can change their attitudes. You can also look and see what they are researching, and see if you can trade it to them (if you already have it) and get a deal for it.
it has been roughly 3 weeks since I last fired Civ IV up. I blame crap like work, the wife, and my compulsive obsession with getting my bills paid. Damn the man!

Thankfully I don't have to worry about spending hours playing. I have computer/tennis elbow and it basically has forced me to only use the computer for important things (like posting to this thread).
I like to name my cities accordingly. If I a super rich city, I rename it Beverly Hills. High production city gets renamed to Pittsburgh or Detroit. I also rename my border cities too.
My favorite to play is with Roosevelt jusf for the civic traits. I've also played with Frederick of the Germans. It really just depends on what your strategy is - expansive, technology, world domination, etc etc
