I usually use the republican slingshot with commercial civs, especially greece and korea, where you research writing, code of laws, philosophy, and then take the republic as your free tech. Keep the AI away from all the techs leading to the republic for as long as possible.

Ironclads are useless, so are chariots, since they are wheeled and horsemen are only a tech away. War Chariot is a horrible UU, so is cossack, man O war, and F-15. If your having alot of naval battles at that time, ironclads are just around the corner.

I agree with The Quirk because otherwise the AI will just build there again. Also if you are the only one the continent i always fill up the entire continent or else the AI will build there and make a nice little outpost for invading your civ.

I get my GL before i build FP about 90% of the time and use it for FP (unless i am playing tiny archipeligo or something). Otherwise i use it to create an army then military academy and then more armies.
