I would like to compare this to Civilization, where you have to build the Space Ship before anyone else(*), or you lose. There is no such motivator in Colonization. The only thing you have to worry about is to maximize your score. Technically you cannot lose (unless you lose the independence...
This is how I play the game:
My goal is to be the *first* power to gain indepencence. I focus on small empire with good machinery to produce armed force. The end game is the goal that should always be in your mind when playing.

* transport lumber to Quebec if there is less than 50 lumber in it AND Montreal has more than 80.
- advanced worker actions:
* if lumber=300, go to carpenters shop, return when lumber=100

there is no point disbanding your damaged artillery since there is no upkeep cost for it. Just keep it in your reserve while building new ones. You will need even the damaged ones in the War of independence.
What is the point of the game???
I will explain what do I mean. I know, that you are supposed to build your colonies and army and declare independence and fight the war and win it. I still don't get where comes the challenging part. It seems it is only matter of time until are powerful enough...
