my prob with windows was fixed, and im finally playing colonization again. one good way ive found to play is to have 2 coastal colonies, and 2 feeder colonies for ore, coats, etc. i dont like cities on islands, because they are too easily taken by ref... i think the occ might be fun, maybe ill try it.

occ is easy in col. just need to start colony in that one place up by NY. one time, i got a prime ore, cotton, fur, and fish square. plus its mostly that wheat growing land. one city is also easier to defend and maintain against ref...

I usually play on the map of America and set up three or four colonies in South America. One for cotton/tabacco, one for sugar cane, one for ore, and one for silver. Works pretty well. :king:

Silver gets quickly cheap. The only true stable thing is musket. That's always expensive. Unless you play dutch, better not bet on silver for too long

I usually don't depend on it for too long. But it helps fund me while I build up an army to get rid of the Incas. :mwaha:
Besides, it take me a while to get my musket making operation going to full steam.

I never destroyed even one indian city. Never. Trading with them help, and also their convert help me a lot. I'm not a pacifist but well, I prefer convert them rather than killing them.

Well, if it makes you feel better, I (usually) never get rid of the Cherokee. :cooool:
The Inca cities always give me a ton of gold. :king: Perhaps the converts would help me, but when you've only got three or four colonies and you haven't got any room for anymore colonists, the natives just tend to feel...unproductive. And I can't have natives trailing home without a taste of that old time religion. ;)

Well you could take your scouts and go for rumors. Then if you get fountain of youth or one of the 7 cities of gold, you get more than any poor indian city :p At least 6K gold... And if your converts are unproductive, you can make them soldiers :)

Heh, you poor soul. Six thousand gold is nothing compared to Inca cities. At least in the easier levels, I don't know if it changes in the harder levels. :p
And I'm nice to the Indians in the beginning. Until the price of silver drops, that is, and I can't trade with them anymore. :satan:
And besides, you can look for rumors, but you might find a "You have disturbed blah blah blah of our fathers..." and the Indians still get mad at you. :(

I suck at colonization lol and eh I play the dutch and silver hasn't dropped yet.
(still sells at 19 per 100 ton.
Of course high tax rate is killing me. and the english attacking my sugar cane capital :(
(sigh they already destroyed two artillery behind forts. (ok maybe they're not called artillery but the cannons behind fortresses with simple soldiers I find that cheap.)
and I can only win at discoverer constantly and occassionally at the 2nd level
I suck
lol I think my problem is I build toooo many colonies. sorry I'm to use to civ where lots of cities are good so my protection is sorta thinned out. hmmm can you burn opposing europeans colonies? or can you only capture them.

When you capture a colony, you can move all of the colonists out of the colony. Then a box will come up asking if you want to abandon the colony. Pick, "Yes, it is God's will" and the colony will be abandoned. :) You can also do this to colonies you've established yourself.

O fortuna imperatris mundi ;)
Yeah gold rules the world... So now I know who exterminated the Indians. It was not the conquistadores, it's a confused Miss ;) :D

And plus, if you find a city of gold, you never get the Indians message (blablabla our ancestors blablabla).

(I think the most of you probable already now this) You can have lots of fun with this: there are a few files in the civ folder, for example king.txt, you can change the things leaders from others civilisation say. Let theme be a bit more respectful...

Funny smilies by the way :egypt: :scan: :nuke: :king: :o :goodjob:   :o

This is how I play the game:

My goal is to be the *first* power to gain indepencence. I focus on small empire with good machinery to produce armed force. The end game is the goal that should always be in your mind when playing.

EARLY GAME: getting a good start.

- search a good coastal place for first colony. My first priority is food and production. then ore. then other goods.

- to get a good start, you need people fast, and if they are professional, the better.

- send some scouts as soon as possible to get every lost city piece and visit every indian village (you get something from almost every village, and especially from aztecs and incas). See what professions they train. Sugar/cotton/tobacco planters can be gained only by indian training (random learning from working also, but it is too rare)

- try to find silver at the _early_ game, you get LOTS of money! In the end game it is almost useless, so be quick!

- at start, just sell something to get money for people (to get fast start)

- at start, it is sometimes wise to hurry immigration by buing them at Europe. You probably cannot "train" expensive professionals at start.

- buy tools, muskets and horses at early game (I helps you to get started, and they will get more expensive later)

- trade some trade goods with indians at start. You get good money. It only works few times, later it is not useful.

- the first building should, of course, be lumber mill. The others depend on the role of the colony.

- at start it is wise not to build big armies. It is better to make those people work rather that stand useless.
Do it as long as it is safe.

- for early game, Peter Minuit, William Brewster, Hernando de Soto are good ones. Maybe Sieur de la Salle.

MIDDLE GAME: establishing a strong production machinery.

- find some other colonies. It is best to have only one coastal colony (easy to fight the independence war) The good amount of colonies is 4-7. If you produce too much goods, their price goes down. Find colonies in places with lots of food, lumber and ore.

- Get a professional colonist for every work place.

- Start liberty bell production early to get production bonuses. Churches, catedrals and preachers are not very important in the game.

- There is no much point fighting with other powers. Defence yourself when attacked. You can also capture their soldiers when they lose their horses and weapons in fight. It is a good source of men.

- trade other goods with indians if you happen to find good deals. I have never found mission in Indian villages very big deal. Establish them if a jesuit missionary happens to appear in european docks.

- build your colonies to produce arms and goods.

- Accept smallest taxes, hold tea parties for the biggest ones (8% increase etc.)

LATE GAME: building army

- You aim is to get lots of men, horses and muskets. Breed as many horses as possible. Also build artillery.

- Some artilleries can be bought in Europe, but the price gets higher and higher. Recruit some people from Europe, capture from foreign powers and let your population grow.

- You can train ore miners for 600 at europe, clear their profession and train them in college/university.

- You can use indians to train your soldiers to veteran status. (George Washington is nice, if you happen to get him)

- slaugter at least aztecs and incas for money and for training your troops to veterans.

- build fortress in your costal colony and put LOTS of veteral dragoons and artilleries there.

- you don't really need much navy. Don't concentrate to it.

- Store extra horses to wagon trains, ships etc.

- If you have lots of money and little time, you can buy veteran soldiers (2000 gold!) from Europe.

- Also buy lots of horses/muskets/artillery from Europe if the price has not grown too much.

THE WAR OF THE INDEPENDENCE: finishing the game

- your should now have lots of veteran dragons and artilleries in your capital colony fortress. The continental army always attacks your only coastal city.

- Do not move your artillery anywhere. Fortify them in your fortress.

- Use dragoons to attack from outside of your colonies to get the cool terrain bonus.

- try to kill them at the same turn they arrive in your lands to prevent their HEAVY artillery attacks.

- do not attack on foot. equip your routed troops with horses as long as you have them. Horses are cheaper to replace than muskets and dragoons are deadlier.

THE END: aftermath

- wonder how easy it was to fight so big troops with only some (15 to 35) of dragoons and some artillery.

Big post :) should I instead write "yet another strategy guide for Col"

I'm starting to think I'm the only one who doesn't make a point of slaughtering the Incas and Aztecs. Much better to have some native trading partners for when you've flooded the European market with coats, cloth, cigars and rum. Restricting the European supply will cause the price to recover, but only if you can secure a monopoly of one of the four commodities.

In the early game, I try to secure an area (preferably a large island) where I can build around six secure colonies. I wipe out any native settlements that are close enough to represent a threat to those colonies, but apart from that I make a point of being nice to the natives.

In time, those six colonies will develop into the industrial heart of my colonial empire. When I have the money, I train the European specialists I need to give one of the colonies a decent economy and make me self sufficient in tools, and later muskets. The other five colonies are used to produce cash crops to fund this programme until I am ready to expand them. Meanwhile I send out scouts to investigate lost cities before someone else does and make contact with everybody.

In the mid-game, I develop my six colonies, while establishing one settler colonies elsewhere to take advantage of special resources such as silver or prime land for growing one of the cash crops. I set up an automatic trade route to handle the hassle of transporting my stuff to the industrial colonies.

I establish a monopoly of either sugar or tobacco, depending on my location, by wiping out rival colonies on the appropriate terrain and buying lots of privateers to disrupt enemy shipping and obtain extra muskets.

Every native settlement, regardless of terrain, will trade for rum or cigars providing you don't offer the same commodity twice in a row and tribe doesn't hate your guts. Also, some native settlements, including the Inca and Arawak capitals will pay ludicrous amounts for tobacco; over 1500 gold for 100 tonnes of unprocessed tobacco, something that I suspect is a bug. Wiping these settlements out would be like killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

I make a fortune out of trading with the natives, and I often go to war with a rival colonial power to help out the natives. I like to give (well, sell) lots of horses and muskets to the natives to give them a better chance when fighting my rivals.

I build a custom house in each one of my industrial colonies because exporting goods becomes easier and piracy becomes less of a problem. Also, I don't have to worry about the effects of boycotts when I reject the King's kindly offer to increase my tax rate by 8%.

I bribe my colonial rivals to keep fighting each other; this and my privateers keeps the price of muskets high, and my colonial arms manufacturing industry nets me a vast profit that more than offsets the cost of the occasional bribe.

When I start preparing for the War of Independence, I abandon all my one settler colonies, upgrade the defences of my industrial colonies to fortresses and stuff them full of colony made artillery - giving me my best chance of sinking the Royal fleet. I also have plenty of veteran dragoons sitting around in my colonies, just waiting to become continental cavalry.
