Yah... Definitely the SNES version. I didn't like it as much as the PC version, mostly because of a lack of keyboard support.

Civ 1, My favorite way to play would be to kill off every AI but the last city, then surround it with defensive units. This would keep them contained until the 'natural' end of the game, and allow me to rack up as big of a score as possible. :)
