There is a WORKAROUND: Use the "What Will You Give Me?" button instead.

So if the ~make equitable button doesn't work then cancel the deal and make a new deal with your offer and ask the AI "What Will You Give Me?". Then it will give you gold.

Doesn't work in all cases, like the one described here:
Yes, I've seen the "make this deal more equitable" button not work frequently with the [1.0.9.9] update. I play at Deity level: when I used to make alliances, I'd click on the gpt button so that they'd offer 10 gpt, then hit the "more equitable" button so they'd give me something (usually). Now that button doesn't do anything with alliances. But I can still get that something manually.

It usually does for me, but you do have to cancel out of the offered trade and start again by offering them what you want to trade.
The gotcha there of course is that it does not work well if you want something from them.....but on the plus side it seems to have eliminated the exploit where you can get the AI to trade away 2/3 of their cities for a peace-out (which was just daft)

So they really, actually, dared to NOT fix this issue in today's patch. I am soooo angry right now.
Is it too difficult to fix or do these people calling themselves "developers" just have some diabolical "fun" annoying the buyers of their product?
I don't get it.

Seems that not many people care about this. Aren't you also annoyed by this endless clicking back and forth to get the right amount of gold or gold per turn? For me this is currently the single MOST annoying thing in the whole game.

Of course I care and it bothers me so much I've reduced a lot my playing time of the game. Barely tried corporations, not even barbarian modes yet. But I'm very doubtful it will change anything to post many times how angry we are. At this point, except being patient, I don't see what to do.

The bug is STILL not fixed, I cannot believe it.
Hey Firaxis, take your zombies where the sun doesn't shine. Try to take care of the relevant things.

Seems fixed to me! (today - 1.0.11.16)

and it's consistant with:

Only half fixed for me, I've been selling open borders to the AI in a game i started since portugal dropped. I'll put open borders on both sides of the trade screen, they'll be OK with it. I'll add that they have to pay me 100 gold, then they refuse and the "make this deal more equitable" button does nothing. The I manually change the 100 gold down to 60 gold, and the AI still refuses, but now the "make this deal more equitable" button actually does function. I can get screenshots next time it comes up.

Well, somehow I'd like it, if the AI players would consistently refuse to even think about far too unfair proposals ("Forget it, you can do better!") and not just function as a "best price machine".

I can't really say that I would like these kind of haggling simulation (as it would be a pretty bland one; Imperium Greek Wars does this a lot better for example: Imperiums: Greek Wars (sucessor of Agressors: Ancient Rome ) | CivFanatics Forums ), but I could life with it.
However, the current bug isn't limited to being greatly off. The function is not always broken and in some cases (like in an example I gave earlier in this thread) it indeed only gets broken, if you differ from the acceptable amount too much. But here you can see that even being one Gold above can break it:

This is the maximum acceptable deal in this case:

Now see what happens if you offer the 22 Coal instea for 543 Gold and ask for a fair deal:

Anyone notice AI improvements since Apr 2021 patch?

They certainly don't trade you all their diplomacy early game anymore. (I can't find the bug report that mentioned that).

I'm always hesistant with calling something fixed and even more so, if something would be a stealth fix then...but I haven't runned so far into the issue discussed here since the April patch. Can anyone else confirm that it is working again?

It did for me, have played one game to the end and noticed no glaring trade issues. Counter proposals worked fine. (You can always argue about valuations oc). They offer a lot of overcomplicated trades around great works, but that's not a bug level issue.
