1.74 issues despite Ori's advice

I am trying to reinstall Civ4 on my wife's computer. At first we had an issue installing and uninstalling the game but changing the Installation Shield file helped with that.

After we managed to install the game correctly we tried updating to 1.74. It downloaded fine but then gave an error saying another copy already existed. I tried playing again and it said it needed the patch. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it, tried again and the same thing. I uninstalled the game, reinstalled, and tried patching to 1.61 and same error.

Next I followed Ori's checklist at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=150745

I also deleted the Sid folder the Registry and another registry file that someone recommended.

After doing all that I installed the game and tried to patch 1.61 and got the same error again. Finally I tried skipping it and going for BTS on her computer. While installing the expansion it gave me an error saying it could not install the patch and closed that installation.

At this point I have tried every piece of advice I could find. She was able to play the game before but not anymore. My wife is not much of a gamer so this is the only PC game she and I play together. It is just frustrating that she cannot patch so I can play with her. And 2kGames does not seem very helpful unfortunately.

Thanks for any advice.

Oh and Vista Premium 32 bit

Finally got it. I went through the registry and found several other files that were hiding. I used a registry cleaner she had, deleted every file that contained the words "Sid Meier, Firaxis, or Civilization", renamed the Installation Shield file, rebooted, reinstalled again using my Game of the Year Edition that had 1.61 already on it, and downloaded 1.74 from here. Seems to have finally taken.

How did the uninstaller miss all of this stuff?
