1.74 patch install failed and can't uninstall

Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased Civ4, played it for about 2 weeks (problem free) then I figured I'd give the online gaming a try. This required the 1.74 patch upgrade which failed during install.

I couldn't get the game to work after this failed patch install. My only recourse was to uninstall Civ4. (which I attempted to do through the control panel.)
It wouldn't let me uninstall the game -gave me error messages during uninstall attempt.

My next move was to wipe off any and everything I could find from Civ4 on my hard drive, as well as to delete registry keys. I even deleted the saved game files, restarted and tried to re install Civ4.

It keeps giving me the same error message, which basically says I need to uninstall 1.74 first, before I can install the older version (which is the CD) of 1.61. Since the patch failed to install properly, there never was the 'correct' way to uninstall it through control panel >remove programs.

Any suggestions? I have obviously missed something here with the 1.74 patch, a file or key hiding somewhere....? I'm thinking this would be the issue. When I search for the files I look for both civ4, sid and meier (any and all)

Thanks

J

Try following the various actions in this post. It's worked once so I'm hoping it will work again. :)

Don't forget to delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

Good catch. :goodjob: You might as well delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{4377F918-E6C9-4ECA-A7F5-754B310B7ED8} as well. Note that despite how it displays here there is no space in CurrentVersion.

Thanks GVBN and Sam_Yeager,

The only thing I hadn't erased was {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}.

I just wonder if I'm going to get the same problem when I try to install that patch again...but at least I won't be down for 3 days fixing it.

I was able to find the key(s) and delete them and get around my patch install issue, but obviously I have made a mistake somewhere.

The game installs correctly until I make that last CD switch and I then get an error

"internal error 2718".

I've looked up this code online and what I have found is that this is a generic installer code error

"2718 Missing package name for product code '[2]'."

I found this reference at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372835.aspx

However, I can't say I know what to do next.

Any suggestions? Otherwise, I suppose I can just restore my backed up registry and hope that fixes it.

Thanks

registry mechanic saved the day here. after running it, I was able to successfully uninstall and then re install and now it works.

however, I will not be installing the upgrade patch.

Thanks guys for your help
