1.74 Patch - Source Not Found Error

Yesterday when we went to play Civ4 we got the download new patch dialog, we downloaded it and during the installation received an error stated that it could not find the Civ 4 source and then the installation "finished." After that the game will not run. We tried uninstalling the game, but the uninstall fails. I've tried running setup on the original disk, but it says there is a newer version installed and that I have to run uninstall first, which, as I said, fails. I downloaded the full 1.74 patch and tried running that again, failed again on the same error stating that it couldn't find the "source." I've read the other posts, I'm not getting a direct x error, but tried reinstalling direct x again, patch still fails, uninstall still fails. Short of going in and editing the registry, how to I fix this huge patch fiasco since I can't seem to install or uninstall the game?? BTW, I just have basic Civ 4, no expansions. Thanks.

I would really appreciate any ideas anyone has. I have tried everything short of going into the registry and removing the civ4 keys, which I would prefer to avoid, but I am not hearing that there is any other solution to this patch fiasco.
So please, if you've run across this and found a fix, please let me know. Thanks!

Well, I've been keeping up with the posts on the forums, hoping I'd find some help since I am not getting any replies.

I found a reply to another post with a similar problem that said to delete the following registry keys only:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firaxis Games

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

I tried that, and I was able to finally reinstall the game. However, when the installer asked for the 3rd disk and I put it in and clicked okay, the installer suddenly stopped and gave me the following error:
"Error 1706 No valid source could be found for product Sid Meiers Civilization 4. The Windows Installer cannot continue." Then the installer shut down.

So this morning, I ran the full uninstall again, then this time I went through the registry and removed every single key that had a value with Firaxis, Civ4 or Civilization. Then I restarted and tried a re-install again. This time, the install was successful, I didn't get the no valid source message this time.

At this point I am really weary of trying to install the 1.74 patch again. I am still reading problems with multiplayer with no solutions.

Has anyone been able to successfully install this patch?

I was applying the patch to upgrade from 1.61 to 1.74 and got the same "Error 1706. No valid source found" and the installer failed.

I tried to install again 1.74 over 1.74 and it failed again.

Then I uninstalled CIV IV altogether (unchecking all the options like save files etc) and reinstalled 1.00 and immediately applied 1.74 to that.

I then got a more promising pop-up message saying Installshield is searching for game assets and may take a few minutes and after a while the update completed sucessfully.

However, CIV would still not start due to the seperate problem with the component D3DX9_32.DLL being missing. (My OS is Windows XP and the latest version I had in C:\windows\system32 was D3DX9_30.DLL).

I then immediately upgraded DirectX with the SDK developers kit from Microsoft - see the download database for details and CIV would then run again.

What a hassle just to be allowed to enter GoTM the patch does very little in game terms over 1.61.

Actually with the help from this thread and the download thread it only took about 1hr to fix which is much better than some reports on the forum.

Many thanks to all

Not perfectly but after looking all over for a solution I just let it go. Nothing seems to prevent the Error 1706 pop up on my PC when installing patch 1.74.
So far there seems to be no noticable differences after doing so either. It still plays fine...so far.

For uninstalling: I found that the from-the-disc 1.61 version does not uninstall via Add/Remove programs nor does the 1.74 version. So that problem is not related to the patch. Firaxis says to pop in your disc 1, click on the setup.exe icon and uninstall will begin from there. I tried that and it worked perfectly.

Oh yeah, and 2K did reply to me a second time. Took longer to get a reply than the first time.
They just wanted to know if the game played fine after that error pop up during install and that if I got a new error message during game play that I should send them a note again.

Hello

Please Ignore the error message as it does not affect the install of the patch at all if you ever have any more issues please email us straight back and we will always be happy to help

My Question:
Yes the game seems to play fine after the error message pops up during v1.74patch install. And I also noticed that the uninstall peculiarity I mentioned is not patch related, because the from-the-disc 1.61 Civ 4 version also has the same uninstall peculiarity, which I can get around by inserting Disc 1 and clicking on the setup.exe icon. So it is not really an issue. Reason I say this is because after looking more and playing more, I see NO bad side effects after the patch install, just the bothersome Error 1706 message one time. Other people on the Civfanatics gamers forum said to ignore it.
Hopefully that is your advice as well. I suppose my next move would be enjoy the game and if another game error message happens I can screen shot it and send it to you.
Great game

I'm having problems with both 1.74 and uninstalling. None of the options suggested seem to work.

i can't run the game - it gives me an 'Init Error' Error loading shader libraries
i can't uninstall from Add/Remove programs - gives me the following error:
'An error (-5004: 0x80041f42) has occurred while running the setup.
Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications. If the error still occurs, please contact your vender'
I cant uninstall by the suggestion above - running setup.exe from disk1:
The setup has detected that a later version of the software is installed. Please uninstall this first....

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I did this which I got from another thread and it worked. But before you do, I suggest you restart your PC and set a Restore Point in case you mess up the registry.

Do a search of your computer (with the search program) for Civ4and delete any files that you believe are actually Civ4 files.

Once that's done, your work isn't. Microsoft has made it so computer newbies cannot delete important files. So go to the program 'run' (either on the main start menu or in the acessories folder) and type in regedit.

Then delte the following directories and NOTHING ELSE

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firaxis Games
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

You should now be able to install the game again.
My Note : You could have multiple entries under the first key that ends in \Firaxis Games such as Sid Meier's Railroads! or others, just take out the Civ4 Key if there are additional registry folders other than Civ4 in the "\Firaxis Games" key.
P.S. all registry edits are done at your own risk!

Thanks for the info, but still doesn't work. The specified registry key in Uninstall was not there. Instead, I looked through the other keys and found the one for Civ4 and deleted it.

However, when I attempt to install, its still telling me i have v1.74 installed.

Ok, so I finally was able to clear out all of the existing files to enable me to reinstall.

In addition to deleting the Civ4 files, you also need to remove the relevant registry settings in HKEY_Current_User and HKEY_Local_Machine. Once I deleted both sets of registry settings, all is right....

:D

Hey i have a problem with the 1.74 patch.....it says that d3dx9_32.dll was not found...and every time i try to reinstall the game it wont let me because it cant find some thing....if you have any information on how to fix it please tell me.....many thanks....

Well, maybe it could be that the two set ups of the original version of 1.6 conflicts with the 1.7 patch. I sent an email to 2k and am hoping for a good solution soon. I found the 1.7 patch file within the {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8} file. If anyone wants to tinker with it and see what happens they're more than welcome too. I just reinstalled it, and dont exactly feel like going through the trouble of reinstalling the patch and game all over. Good luck! :)

never mind, I emailed 2k games and they found the solution. It was a matter of downloading the Direct X 9.0 version from June, which doesn't automatically install in the Civ 4 start up. Thanks for the quick response. It's good to see that your all quite active even years after this game has been released :)

Well, turns out, that was the wrong solution. Alas, I spoke too soon. Once again Error 1706 popped up saying no source could be found. dang =/

The Game of the Year edition's install program does not put the correct info in the registry. This causes two issues:
1) Game will give an error when installing the 1.74 patch
2) Uninstalling from add/remove programs will not work

For fun, I tried to figure out how to manually fix the GOTY's install registry keys, but I had no luck. There is no way to avoid these two problems. The first problem is caused by the patch installers trying to update the registry keys, but the registry has the wrong information, so it cannot. Since this information is related to the uninstall program, it will not affect you, since the uninstall doesn't work anyway (also due to the incorrect registry data)!
