In a recent game (on a fractal map), I got a very cramped in starting position. I managed to fight my way out of it, mostly. I was trying to annihilate my neighbour (Mansa Musa), and when I took his 'last' city, I found out, that he sneaked off, and built a small city on a far away 1-tile island. Now it will take me quite some turns to get enough ships there to finish him off.

While trying to sue for peace (no point in living with that WW) I saw that he would accept capitulation. -- What do you think, how good or bad is a one-city vassall? He will probably have next to none research, but IIRC I will get +1 :) for having a vassal, won't I?

I am not sure exactly how much extra maintenance vassals add. If it is a certain amount added to each of your cities then it is probably not worth taking a one-city vassal. On the other hand he might vassalize to or sign a defence agreement with another civ which might cause you problems later.

you get a happy for having a vassal. you also get a -1 diplo with all other civs, this adds up as you get multiple vassals, just another factor to keep in mind.

more info here but it is still confusing, at least to me, even after playing around with it a bunch of times.

Ya getting that -1 "We are worried about are rivals vasselizeing to you" is a real pain and can hurt your relations, but another thing to factor in is if there are only three people on the map and you vasselize one the other will get -4 instead of -1 so the amount of players on the map effect it.

Not worth it. Have to go for the kill to gid of rid of the yearn to join motherland in their captured cities.

If you don't know where the last city is then go for peace, by the time you find the last city you will be able to declare war again (10 turns is usually up by then).

If you are going for a military win then take them as a Vassal - a vassal counts as 'defeated' if you are going for conquest or part of your territory if you are going for domination.

As soon as he settles another city, he can break free right? Doesn't seem worth it.

No its the land he has when he vassalises that counts. He can only break free if he loses 50% of that land, which isn't possible in this case. If you take him, he's yours forever. The only things to consider, as stated by others, are 1) the negative penalties with other civs, and 2) the "we yearn for the motherland" (I'm not actually sure if this doesn't somewhat or totally go away when the "motherland" is a vassal., have to check in a future game)

The positives are +1 happiness in each of your cities, and the possibility of fluking a sole later resource in his one city (or actually any others he may found). The increased upkeep is negligable for such a small vassal, and its unlikely hes ever going to be any help in a future war.

The last factor to check, is if there is another powerful nation willing to take him as their vassal, then you could end up in a sudden unwanted war with someone else.

The choice is yours :)

Dude your better off just building theatres or temples in your cities....don't vasselilate him unless he can actually research and help you in war.....which is what vassals are SUPPOSED TO DO FIRAXIS!!! Most AI only capilitate when they have 1-2 crappy cities left, sadly.

Okay, you convinced me. I just made peace with him, and ignored him. Instead I concentrated my troops on the next willing prey :)

(Note: Galleons are too f***ing slow to attack someone on the other end of a large fractal map)
