2 free techs from ToE

I am still perplexed as to how you choose your two free techs from Theory of Evolution.

I've tried the traditional way of clicking and selecting them on the tech tree through the science advisor but when I've done that ToE brought me completely different techs. I've also made sure that I've half researched Electronics in time for ToE's building so that it would be a cheap tech and perhaps pop up that way but again I got completely different techs and still had to research Electronics till the end. Usually this all doesn't matter as it's a way of just speeding up a game that's already won but I'd like to move up difficulty level sometime and want to get this important trick sussed.

So how is this done and is it foolproof so you'll always get the two techs you choose?

I'm not sure, but I normally choose by clicking on the tech I want from the science advisor tech list (not going to the big picture). Unfortunately I always forget to synchronise my research with the TOE so that I always get a almost-finished tech as free, then get to choose one other tech.

The ToE will complete the tech you are currently working on. If you timed it to finish the tech on the same turn as the ToE, you will finish it and then get the two free ones. This is the ideal way to go.

You then get a pop saying this is what we are learnig and you can change it and get that tech. You then get the second free one the same way.

I always take AT and Elec. This lets you go right into Hoovers and it is game over.

If you will not complete a project in the project time of the ToE, either speed it up or stop researching. I will pick a path the fits the time frame.

But ToE doesn't complete the tech research you are doing at the time of completion. This is what I mean about me half researching Electronics and not getting it as one of the free techs.

Yes, it appears you need to patch your game. TOE use to give the two 'cheapest' techs you don't already know. Many times this would be optional Middle Age techs.

Here is what I do, and it works FLAWLESSLY:
1) You're building the ToE
2) You just finished researching a Tech. With Science at Max, can you fish another Tech BEFORE you complete the ToE?
3) If yes, then go ahead and research it.
4) If no, then you should select the Tech that you want from the ToE, and then turn your Science OFF. You can make some big $$ for a couple of turns. When the ToE completes, you will automatically get the Tech that you are currently researching (you're at 0%, so you're not really researching). Then, you just choose the next free Tech. Typically, Atomic Theory and Electronics are the 'Techs of choice', as they are the most expensive. However, sometimes I will take ReplParts and Atomic Theory.
5) Optimally, the timing works out that it's not more than just 2 or 3 turns of having Science off. Usually, by this time, I can research some of the cheaper Tech's (like Sanitation) in like 4 or 5 turns, other Techs in maybe 8 turns. So, if the timing is like 6 turns to complete the ToE and I want to get a Tech that will take me 7 or 8 turns, I will then pull some citizens off of the ToE build to extend it to 9 or 10 turns, to better time it with my research.

Thanks guys. I know most of these tricks and that's what I do when I'm building ToE but I guess the patch advice above is the most spot on. Off I go to get that patch then...

If I've just finished researching a tech with about 2-3 turns till TOE is completed, i just usually click on Electronics (as to select both NT and Elec) and move my science slider down to zero. That way i make sure i don't waste my time researching a tech I'm about to get free, plus you can usually make an extra 700 - 1500 gpt for those last turns.

Thanks again. It seems I was just playing with a bugged version all along. Now I have C3C it doesn't seem to happen. Phew! Cheers.

My favourite use of ToE is to take the last Industrial tech + Fission as my freebies, and finish my UN (pre-)build on the same inter-turn. Pull that off, and it looks pretty darned cool :D I've only managed it once.

Hmm... I wonder if I could use ToE that way in a HoF Space Race game... Build it, get last Industrial Tech and (before choosing the second tech) trading for all the level one techs with the Scientific AIs after gifting them to the Modern Age, then get Space Flight with ToE and I could get Superconductor as my free tech!

Nah... time ToE build with researching the last IA tech. Get Computers and Miniaturization as free techs/trade, and build the Internet on turn 1 of the Modern Era. I figure all 4 base techs, plus Miniaturization, plus Nuclear Power, could be yours.

The problem is, if I do what you do, I get my free tech before I get to trade with the AIs, I think.

The answer is "yes". You can read more about it here:
