I have 2 units I am making,

1) a 'milita' or a slower fighting/defending worker, I want to make 'milita I' - 'milita III' so that you can upgrade them through out the game. They would be like a home guard. That way workers could be usefull in times of war and once they have improved everything.

2) a flatbed/troop transport (land), They would be used to transport slower units like riflemen and artiliry up to the front faster. It would allow you to keep them up to speed with your tanks and cavalry. They would have no attack and minimal defence.

Before I begin I just wanted to see if anybody had already made these units?

Is there any intrest or ideas?

It seems Rabbit, White has implemented this very idea. I haven't tried this out myself, so I can't verify how it ended up.

If you still want to try your hand at it, I did come up with a few ideas.

1) a 'milita' or a slower fighting/defending worker, I want to make 'milita I' - 'milita III' so that you can upgrade them through out the game. They would be like a home guard. That way workers could be usefull in times of war and once they have improved everything.
Have you considered the idea of letting certain technologies grant combat (or at least defensive) ability to the worker unit? Perhaps over time you can research a tech to allow your worker some defense ability and have that improve with further technology to keep it somewhat in line with the combat units in the same time frame. Maybe not enough defense to stop an army, but perhaps enough to give a solid lump to an attacker, enough so that it needs to heal a bit before continuing to plunder the countryside.

I'm envisioning starting the game with Workers, and then researching some technology that lets you promote them to Militia, who have a bigger combat value and the ability to defend only (like Scouts and Explorers), and then later a technology allows you to promote them to National Guard, which gives them a bigger combat value and maybe a suitable promotion (perhaps City Garrison I, or Flanking I).

2) a flatbed/troop transport (land), They would be used to transport slower units like riflemen and artiliry up to the front faster. It would allow you to keep them up to speed with your tanks and cavalry. They would have no attack and minimal defence.
In a similiar fashion, perhaps a technology could allow you to produce an initial unit to transport land units (a Wagon or War Wagon, call it what you wish), and further advances in technology allow you to upgrade the combat power and improve the defense the transport gives to the units it's carrying.

Just a few ideas that came to mind reading your post.

I thought about making the Milita and the Warrior Worker a cylical upgrade. If your unit is a Warrior Worker and you see an army you can upgrade them to a Milita for lets say 20/unit gold. When they are Milita they lose their worker abilities and can fight modertaly. Once the war is over you can 'upgrade' them back to a Warrior Worker for lets say 10 gold/unit. They would lose their fighting abilities and go back to workers. I think the cost of 'upgrading' back and fourth could be tinkered with to make it balanced enough so that you would have to be stratgic about it.

I like then mixing in your idea about having Techs that would make stronger and stronger Warrior Workers and Milita/National Guard!
