Help!

I'm trying to upgrade to 3.17, but either Vista or Civ4 is not playing ball. I downloaded 3.17 a number of times when it came out but had no luck. Then a I found a post which told me where the in-game downloader actually downloads it to. (For Reference it's: C:\...\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\Patch)

When I tried to this I got a windows error (enclosed) that the patch was not a Win32 Application.

I've tried turning off UAC and running it again and re-installing CIV4 Gold, but have had no luck.

On the re-installed version I tried to download the patch (again!) I got an error message (Update Error) Worse still, I couldn't leave the Advanced Screen. (Apparently the patch was still attempting to do it's magic, though it clearly wasn't)

For anyone else who has the misfortune to be caught in the same position, I got out by firing up Task Manager from Ctrl-Alt-Del, Alt-tabbing to it and then killing the application there.

I've checked the Application Log in Event Viewer. There are two processes in close proximity.

"A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Sid Meier's Civilization 4 : Beyond The Sword)"

"The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application."

And that's where my bug-fixing grinds to a halt, I'm afraid. Can someone please help me as I'm using all that creative energy that should be going into outwitting the French and the Egyptians into scheming how I can kidnap Bill Gates and lock him in my room until he makes Vista work with Civ4 :)

Thanks for getting back to me.

I eventually deleted the executable that had been installed by the in-game updater and downloaded the patch from one of the links on this site (I forget which I'm afraid) This was an executable which ran right away over the newly installed version of Civ 4 and has worked perfectly.

To summarise in case anyone else has this error in the future. Re-install Civ 4 at it's default location then download the patch direct as an executable.

Bill may once more sleep peacefully tonight :)
