3D modeler?

You could get Rhinocerous 2.0 evaluation, which is a very good program, but the evaluation only gives you 25 saves then you have to buy it for more. That can be found on www.Zdnet.com. Also 3D canvas is a free 3D program but is not very good. That can be found on www.google.com by typing in 3D Canvas. I suggest you get the Rhino evaluation and take the tutorials. Boulboulgadol did that now he is a pro a unit making. Hope this helps :D.

Hey thanks Vdog, I'm trying to learn 3D myself. I think I'm jumping ahead myself with Lightwave 7 though. :)

Thats good snoopy, lightwave is a very good program and I'm glad your taking up the challenge. We need some more good creators around here :D.

I agree with you Vdog. I need to learn 3D or I'll get behind in the graphics arena.

Hmm..those questions become quite frequent, maybe we should have one of those threads glued to the top of the forum.

Free or demo versions of 3d modelling programs:
gmax (free)
Maya Personal Learning Edition (demo)
Aztec 3D modeller (freeware - haven´t tried this)

Modelling tutorials:
3D Artists (3dmax/lightwave 3d/softimage 3d)
Modeling a human body (3dmax)
Animation and other tutorials by Wolf Blade (3dmax - click on "learn")
3D Total (3dmax/maya/lightwave - click on "free stuff" and select tutorials from the drop down list)

The functionality of gmax depends mainly on how the developers support it with so called game packs.
Maybe we could also ask Firaxis to create of of those game packs for gmax which gives us the right lighting, camera setup, some reference models etc.

Another idea I have is to create a special thread where all newcomers to 3d modelling can post their progress and others comment on it. This way you don´t need to build your complete model to get some feedback.

Good idea Balou.

btw thanks Vdog again. Rhinoceros was brilliant. The way that it works is very helpful, it makes sure you don't stuff things up, where as in lightwave, you can stuff things up easily, I guess you just have to know what you're doing. but I can see now that I'll be good at 3D modelling after using Rhino for a few months.

"Maybe we could also ask Firaxis to create of of those game packs for gmax which gives us the right lighting, camera setup, some reference models etc."

This is a good idea, if Firaxis want us to make good stuff for Civ3, they should at least help us out a little.
