4 problems : Wealth, Scientist, City square, Forests,

I have several problems running CIV 3 :

1) Wealth :
When producing wealth i get just 1 additional gold per turn.
Previous versions of civ gave me 1 additional gold for each
production shield per turn.

2) Scientists & Tax Collectors
Neither scientists nor Tax Collectors do anything.
That is, no additional science or Wealth is produced.

3) Unusable City squares
On the city display laborers are depicted at the bottom of the
picture. The city squares behind the depictions r unusable.
Trying to work them highlights not the square, but a laborer
whose image overlies the square. This laborer is working some
other square.

4) Clearing Forests
clearing forests does not always work. When it fails to
generate production for a city, no notice is posted as to the
reason for this failure. Moreover, a switch seems to be set
which disables all future production from clearing forests for
that city. This switch is never reset.

In Civ3, Wealth is built at the rate of 1 gold per 8 shields of production. In later ages (I forget the qualifying advance) this changes to 1 gold per 4 shields.

A Scientist should add 1 (one) uncorrupted beaker to your science. A Taxman adds 1 (one) uncorrupted gold. These effects are so small that they sometimes seem to have no effect at all.

I'm not sure I understand.

To counter the "lumberjack" exploit, the code was modified so only the first time a tile is cleared are shields added to the city's coffers. All other times nothing is added. Also, if the city is producing a Wonder, no shields will be added from any deforestation - they will just be wasted.

It's economics. this changes to 1 gold per 4 shields.

and for 3, you can onlyuse the cross shapped pattern, the same as in Civ 2
