Proposal: A Domination Victory is achieved when a player controls 75% of the original capitals.

Rationale: This is done to make DV less of a slog. In the vast majority of cases a player that controls 75% of the capitals is also able to conquer the remaining ones, but doing so takes a lot of time.

An alternative option would be changing the DV victory condition to owning a certain percentage of the total land/cities and global population. This would prevent capital sniping and move the focus of DV a bit away from purely waging war, what are your thoughts about this?

This is already an optional setting. If you’re asking to change it so the setting has a different default then I’m against it.

Why 75%? Why not 80% or 85%? It seems arbitrary.

On the alteranative, how is global population related to domination? India, if left unchecked, will have most of the population in the world without a single war. Total land/cities also goes against the victory condition, Huns or Shoshone will also win this without any problem. I think the DV should be about war, not economics. If I take the whole land with citadels from Japan ability, can I win DV without taking a single city?

I don't think this is the way to go. As much as I would like to be able to win a DV on the settings I like to play (Huge maps with 12-15 civs), I think this isn't the solution yet.

I had more than 1 game where I was missing only 1 AI capital, but that was the one runaway AI that in the end won a peaceful victory or at least came close to it.

Currently, you don't need the capital if you manage to vassalise the AI. DV should not become even more easy.

I would rather focus on not making a DV game decided after you conquer 1 or 2 AIs, but rather have 1 or 2 runaways that are ahead in tech. And you can only kill them if you conquer the other AIs first. The DV games that evolved along these lines were the most interesting ones and they stayed interesting till the very end.

If you think you’re well on track to win a DomV, but don’t want to do the work in end game then you can just call it a win and quit whenever you want. No one is forcing you to play it through. VP has already made DomV as attainable as can be reasonably expected in late game, with nukes and teleporting units in late game. I expect it will also be a lot more palatable if using Vern’s multi unit selection stuff.

Originally I liked this proposal, but upon further reflection agree with Pdan. There is no reason why this should become default.

Those are fair points. Thinking about it further and considering your comments, I agree that this proposal is not the best solution to the problem and would like to withdraw it (@Recursive ).
