I never figured this out.
In this screen shot, is my settler on fresh water?
And, what should do as my starting building order??
I expect enemies fairly nearby.
For you curious or interested, I have the 4000bc save nearby.

I see no attachment. Only thing I can say is if you right-click on the coastal tile it will tell you 1 or 2 food, meaning salt or fresh water. So that's the easy bit..

It's great.
I got 2 settler/worker factories, and the continent is loaded with good stuff.
I recommend the save a lot, enough fresh water.
It's on regent level.

Ha, now I see the attachment. I'll have to revise my previous answer a bit: If you're unsure whether a land tile is on the river or not, just right click it and when it shows a gold it's on the river, otherwise not.
Even when I was thinking other civs could be close, I would still build 1 or 2 graneries very early here.

I'd be tempted to move that settler one tile to the right and get an obnoxiously huge amount of wheat tiles. Might be worth the wasted round and having to build an aquaduct.

Wouldn't actually be much of a wasted round if you started that worker on the starting tile roading that wheat.

What's stopping you, Sweetchuck? The save is in post number 2!

I would have moved the settler a tile SW, that's off the wheat and still on the river. The worker can start irrigating straight away.

Right, but you put 2 wheat out of reach. I'm thinking about reaching 6 of them.

Didn't your mommy teach you how to share? ;)

I'm with Optional, would move setter 1SW and settle there. Another city would go on the coast on the north side of the river to use some of the other wheat. That one farthest to the southeast would eventually be used by a third city.

Goodness gracious people you have it all wrong (note the tone here)! (and the silly exclamation point) Move one square north, plant on top of the wheat so you'll have a coast, a river, a forest and a hill, 5 wheats, and play for the 20k.

Or...

...something like this. This gives the option of using the Palace pre-build in the 20K city. This is by all means possible on Regent with this start.

Well you can do that and surely it will work and play out for a fun game no doubt... but the earlier you get wonders in, the earlier you have the 1000 year bonus for wonders. So, the capital usually works as the better location. Or at least that's what almost all (all?) the HoF games I know of seem to imply. You only have 4 wheats if you plop down on your proposed location. You have 5 if you plop down where the worker is in the screenshot on top of the wheat, and you know have a mountain and a forest.

Good option, but what if you wouldn't care about a 20k victory?

I will later post a screenshot with some more land exposed. (or, someone else may)

I don't think Spoonwood even knows there are other ways to win this game.

That's Quartermaster Spoonwood to you Sharwood and others who spout such nonsense.

Theov,

If not playing for the 20k, I'd probably go with Ecuwins suggested placement. Hence, it's a good idea to have your victory condition in mind from the get go.

Say "Master of Quarters," it sounds more regal.

EDIT: Damn ninja. I agree with you there, but there's nothing wrong with simply playing for a win any way you can.

I don't consider 20K a 'victory'. If you know what I mean. Maybe if I tried and found out that it's hard to do.
But ok.
I'm researching Invention now. I'm actually curious about how you would've played this starting scenario.

20k is pretty hard to do, depending on the situation. I joke that Spoonwood doesn't know other victory conditions exist because he's made it into something of an artform.
